'Tis the season… of voting, that is! While we’re all excited for the holidays approaching, Election Day in D.C. is a holiday in itself! On this particular day, the students of George Washington take several fashion risks while flaunting their patriotism and rights. The red, white and blue theme is very prevalent at GW, but difficult to achieve without looking like Uncle Sam. I spotted this Fashionista on her way to vote, looking chic and spirited in our nation’s colors. Her look was not overboard, but patriotic and fun for the theme!
Name: Mandy Fatemi
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Mandy Fatemi: My white button-down shirt and Royal Blue Tippi Crew Neck Sweater are from J.Crew. My red capris are from Dillard's and my sunglasses are Ray-Ban Wayfarers. My shoes are Sperry Top-Siders and my watch and bag are both from Burberry!
CF: How would you describe your personal style?
MF: I would have to say that when it comes to my personal style, I like to stick to somewhat conservative, preppy looks but I try not to overdo it. I'm a pretty loyal J.Crew shopper and have found their clothes to best suit my taste. Their variation in colors, textures and styles always seem to satisfy what I'm looking for to complete my wardrobe. I like to take a modern spin on style icons such as Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn without losing that classic touch.
CF: What do you think are the most popular trends at GW this fall?
MF: This fall it seems like fur vests, peter pan collars and subdued colors have been three of the biggest trends on campus!
CF: What is your favorite fall trend?
MF: Along with peter pan collars, which fit perfectly into my own conservative-preppy taste, I would have to say that my absolute favorite trend this fall is the jeweled tone fad. Not only do I love jeweled tone fabrics, but I also love the accompanying manicures that also echo this trend. I think jeweled tones, more so than bright colors, are much more timeless and I can definitely see myself in jeweled tones past this season.
CF: What is one item you cannot live without?
MF: I can't live without my sapphire ring. It was my mom's and she gave it to me the day before I moved to D.C. for school and I have never taken it off since. The ring has deep sentimental value and it gives me a sense of balance.
How To: To get this classic, patriotic look I first suggest J.Crew’s city fit Café Capris! They come in a variety of colors, patterns and materials and can be worn in any season because they are light and comfortable! To achieve your die-hard American style, check out the red Café Capri in Wool—a perfect material to keep you warm and chic this winter. You will also need an oxford button-down shirt! I love Ralph Lauren’s dress shirts because they are comfortable, soft and can be used for multiple occasions. I recommend the Melanie Stretch Poplin Shirt for this look because of its crispness and cut, bringing the outfit from sloppy to classy. To complete the look, take a look at Gap’s Slouchy Cashmere Sweater in Crisp Royal Blue—a shade of blue true to the flag, itself. Additionally, Brandy Melville has an amazing collection of American flag-themed sweaters! For an alternative look, ditch oxford and put on the Cassidy American Flag Sweater with skinnies and booties!
