FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Kate Sommerville

Fashionista Spotlight

If there’s one thing I love more than celebrating the Christmas season, it’s celebrating the Christmas season in true American style! I spotted this Fashionista rocking a patriotically chic getup as she walked home from her morning final. She was sporting a weathered denim jacket and a classic pair of ruby-red kicks—a look that instantly had me humming along to Springsteen’s version of Santa Clause is Comin’ To Town. In typical Arizona fashion, this stylish collegian shows us all how to incorporate some signature American-style pieces into our winter wardrobes and keep things spirited long after Independence Day!

Name: Kate Sommerville

Major: Elementary Education

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Kate Sommerville:  I would say my style leans mostly toward preppy, but includes equal parts retro and classic feminine.

CF: What do you think of the current trends on campus?

KS:  Of all the trends on campus, my favorite trend has to be anything that is rugged and mountain inspired because it is completely Flagstaff inspired. Girls on campus have some of the greatest boots I’ve ever seen and what girl isn’t a sucker for a guy in a flannel?!

CF: What’s your signature look for winter?

KS: My uniform for the colder months would have to be one of my many blue oxford shirts, nice skinny jeans and a great pair of brown riding boots. It always looks classic and is totally effortless.

CF: What’s one item you think every college Fashionista needs in her closet?

KS: A must for any Fashionista is a pair of nice leather boots that will go the distance for college and beyond. I have a pair of Frye boots that were a major investment but they are tried, true and will never go out of style.

How To: Score a look just as adorably all-American as this Fashionista’s by piling on the basics. Start with a sleek pair of black jeggings and a crewneck sweater—a staple combination for any comfort-seeking college girl. Layer a vintage jean jacket on top for some added interest and texture; denim is a fun way to incorporate some patriotic flavor into your everyday look, especially if you can find a light-wash jacket to rock like this Fashionista. Sport a bold pair of Chuck Taylor-style sneakers, an artsy recycled cuff and oversize Ray-Bans for a relaxed and funky winter ensemble. Rock some seriously spirited pieces this winter (a la the fabulous Lana Del Rey) and there won’t be any doubt you were Born in the USA! owHow
