I’ll go on record as saying that the most exciting trend of 2012 may very well have been peplum. Early on I had some serious reservations about adopting the bold new look, unsure if my body type could handle the dramatic flair of forties-inspired tops and high-waisted skirts. But now I’m a true believer. I believe that peplum flatters everybody, creating the illusion of curves on some and accentuating natural curves on others. So spying this Fashionista in a cream-colored peplum tank with a navy blazer and bold necklace gave me the opportunity to share my new found love with you all. Her take on the eye-catching and versatile silhouette is simple and sophisticated, perfect for the last days of classes before exams.
Name: Gable Brady
Major: Political Science
College Fashionista: What are you wearing?
Gable Brady: A navy blue blazer from American Eagle, cream peplum top from Urban Outfitters, dark wash skinny jeans from American Eagle, mint multilayered necklace, and brown mid-calf Steve Madden boots.
CF: What was the inspiration for your outfit today?
GB: Since the weather was not as cold today, I wanted to wear something comfortable but nice. I love blazers because they are extremely versatile and make an outfit more sophisticated. I wear my boots multiple times a week since they are easy to wear and also dress up an outfit. My top is extremely comfortable, which is nice for late nights at the library. I am pretty busy throughout the day (like every other student), and I spend a lot of time at the library. Therefore, comfort is key, and it’s a lot easier to both dress nice and be comfortable than people believe.
CF: Where do you find fashion inspiration?
GB: I have really gotten into Pinterest lately like every other procrastinating Notre Dame girl has. I think TV shows are a great place to find cute everyday outfits. Unfortunately at this time of year, my red carpet engagements are limited on my social calendar, so formal dresses and ball gowns are not really practical.
CF: What item is at the top of your fashion wish list this Christmas?
GB: Two-tone black and brown leather boots. I'm studying abroad in London next semester, and I am more than a little concerned about packing lightly. They are classic, and most importantly, they go with everything. They definitely help limit the amount of heavy and bulky boots I need to bring.
CF: How do you think going abroad will affect your style?
GB: London is such a fashionable place; I'm hoping it will improve and inspire my style. Since I have to pack lightly, I really want to find ways to use certain staple pieces in different ways to create different looks. I love British culture and I love how everyone's clothes are classic and sophisticated.
CF: If you were stranded in a South Bend snowstorm, what three winter items would you want to have with you?
GB: When preparing for a South Bend winter, its extremely important to layer clothing and cover the most sensitive areas: feet, hands, ears, and head. If you want to dress fashionably, dress cute underneath your heavy winter coat, and add warm scarves and socks to mix up your outfit. So the first of my three things would be my winter coat – during the winter, everyone rocks the giant puffy coats, and mine is warm enough that I can wear a cute top underneath. I really recommend a longer jacket that hits past your waist. Second, warm socks and gloves. My feet and hands can get extremely cold if they are not properly covered. Long socks look really cute when they show past your boots and really add a nice touch to an outfit. For gloves, I recommend not only a really nice warm pair, but also liners. And finally, leggings. I like to wear leggings or liners underneath my jeans in order to add an additional layer of warmth. When I am in the wind tunnel known as South Quad, it really helps fight the bitterness of the wind.
How To: Get on board with E! Online’s number one trend of the year and Gable’s basic base layer by choosing a peplum top that will integrate well into your wardrobe, like this lace tank from Express. For a bolder take on the style, choose a different color like this navy and green top from Marc by Marc Jacobs or a different pattern like this black and white striped Vince Camuto top. The striped look is more versatile than you’d think – I wear a similar shirt with jeans and a colorful coat. Incorporate color into a more basic choice with a bright necklace like Gable’s; this turquoise piece at Forever 21 or this one from Anthropologie will draw out the brighter tones of your outfit. Finish your look with a basic blazer like this one from Topshop – the rolled white sleeves will even match the cream peplum base!
