FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Jennifer Sun

Fashionista Spotlight

I spotted this Fashionista and her amazing necklace while picking up some holiday gifts at the Prudential Center. Her outfit is the perfect mix of girly and edgy, and I love the pastel colors, especially amidst a sea of dark fall clothes!

Name: Jennifer Sun
Major: Accounting
Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Jennifer Sun: I got my cardigan at Stoneflower, this really cool boutique at Faneuil Hall. My blouse is from Seventh Avenue, and my bandeau is from Amazon. I got my necklace from So Good, and my earrings and jeans are from Forever 21. On my feet are my Sperry Top Sider boat shoes.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?
JS: Elegant, colorful and pretty.

CF: Who do you look to for fashion inspiration?
JS: Lauren Conrad has amazing style!

CF: What’s your fall must have item?
JS: My burgundy leather jacket not only keeps me warm but is stylish too.

CF: How many times a day do you change outfits?
JS: Twice. I wear my nice outfits to classes and such, and change into a T-shirt and yoga pants when I'm back in my dorm. Sometimes I might change my outfit three times a day if I  go outside and find that it's much colder/hotter than anticipated.

CF: What fashion item can you not live without?
JS: My black skinny jeans literally go with everything and are so comfortable. They're also extremely flattering, so I love them!

How to: Pair a soft, sheer button-down shirt with classic skinnies, and add a blush-colored cardigan and preppy accessories to achieve that put-together, girly and elegant look. Make sure to keep it classy, especially when wearing a sheer top, by donning a bandeau just to be safe. Then, kick it up a notch with a showstopping statement necklace. J.Crew and Ann Taylor Loft have some amazing ones this season. My new obsession, the website Wanelo, is full of great links to awesome clothes/accessories/bric-a-brac, and where you can find them. It's like Tumblr, except you can buy everything you see! So if you don't want to brave the cold in order to get presents for your fashion-conscious friends, I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Celia Hubbard

Fashionista Spotlight

It seems as if on-campus Fashionistas are prioritizing comfort this semester, but that's not to say that sweatpants and sweatshirts are uniform. Thank goodness. I might transfer out if that was the case.

What I mean to say is that chunky knits and soft jersey fabric are present in almost every outfit. We've seen style icons like Rachel Bilson and Cara Delevingne wear oversized sweaters, so it's only natural that students running from class to class are taking the comfortable route as well.

In case you didn't read the above paragraphs, here's what you need to know: The comfortable route is okay, as long as that means layering knits over leggings or jeans. And no sweatpants — ever.

Name: Celia Hubbard

Major: Film and Television

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How do you describe your personal style?

Celia Hubbard: Laidback. But I like to take trendy risks once in a while.

CF: Who are your favorite designers?

CH: I really like smaller stores and boutiques. I work for J.Crew, so I like those. Things like Madewell. I like things without a label that can mix and you're not really sure where it's from.

CF: Has your style changed since coming to Boston from Los Angeles?

CH: I guess before I was a lot more beachy — a lot of braids and tie-dye stuff. I wore a lot of flowy stuff. I guess now I'm a little bit more preppy, but still have a good mix. I'm probably in the middle, with some nice East Coast influence.

How To: To get this cozy, go-to look, pair opaque black leggings (make sure they're not see-through when you bend over!) with an oversized polka-dot sweater. Accessorize with an infinity scarf and leather peep-toe flats. Keep a neutral eye and highlight your pucker with some red lipstick.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Annie West

Fashionista Spotlight

As a Fashionista, I’m all for trends and the newest fashion forward styles. However, there’s something so timeless about a classic look. This Fashionista proves that it pays to stay true to the classics. She is sporting the perfect outfit for a stroll in the park on an autumn day. The striped fisherman pullover sweater, skinny jeans and riding boots have been seen on celebrities style icons such as Rachel Bilson, Blake Lively and Kate Moss. It must be a winning look!  One thing that this Fashionista and these celebrities have in common is that they know how to look fashionable while staying casual. Get inspired by this Fashionista and never fret again about what to wear to that 8 am class!

Name: Annie West
Year: Junior
Major: English

College Fashionista: What are you wearing?
Annie West: My sweater is from H&M, my jeans are from Urban Outfitters and my boots are Franco Sarto.

CF: Are you more likely to follow trends or stick to a certain style?
AW: I like to think that I stick to a more traditional style, but I like to experiment with trends and play with fun pieces. The outfit I have on right now is mostly classic, but I wouldn’t say that my metallic bag is very traditional.

CF: When you think of a trendsetter in fashion, who do you think of?
AW: When I think of trendsetters, I think of Olivia Palermo. I love Olivia, she has such an amazing way of mixing things and putting outfits together that I wouldn’t even think of. To be honest, I stalk her on Pinterest! I think she has a pretty classic style too, but she incorporates fun prints and statement pieces.

CF: Have you always been interested in fashion and putting outfits together? If so, when do you first remember being interested?
AW: Yes, I have! I first remember being interested when I was about five years old. I would dress up in crazy leggings and tutus. I grew up with only brothers so it was a big deal for me to be girly.

How to: To get this Fashionista’s timeless look, pair your favorite skinny jeans with a nautical chic striped fisherman sweater and add riding boots. It’s as simple as that! Tip: To keep the casual and relaxed look, put your hair up in a messy pony or bun. Good news Fashionistas/os: mornings just got a little easier!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Megan O’Mahony

Uncategorized

Entering campus to search for the inspiration to my last ever post for CollegeFashionista, I was adamant that my final subject would not only define the style savvy which FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT demands, but would also embody everything I love about a true CollegeFashionista – and I found her in the form of this Arts student. While her take on the current stripe trend proves her style-conscious and fashion-forward status, her penchant for originality shines through by teaming trends with her favourite colour palette and beloved Converse sneakers. Indeed, on the subject of style tips and advice to live by, she offered up a shiny pearl of fashion wisdom: don’t focus on following the trends and impressing others; dress to suit yourself and your personality will carry your look. The results of living by such a style motto are clear for all to see, as she manages to combine classic, on-trend stripes with her favourite colours and staple pieces to pull off a look which is not only the epitome of campus comfort, but which is also so chic and unique.

Name: Megan O’Mahony

Major: Arts

Year: One

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Megan O’Mahony: I would describe it as alternative with very indie influences. I love leather and suede and tend to go for a lot of browns and very earthy colour palettes. I like to team feminine pieces with something a little more rough around the edges for a really eclectic finish.

CF: From whom or where do you draw your fashion inspiration?

MOM: I would take a lot of inspiration from my favourite bands, particularly indie singers and performers. In terms of icons, I love the style of Felicity Jones and Zooey Deschanel  they are always dressed very uniquely.

CF: If there was one item of clothing or accessory you could not live without, what would it be and why?

MOM: The brown suede Converse that I am wearing today. I literally wear them all the time with everything, from girly dresses to jeans. They are my absolute wardrobe staple  I don’t know what I would do without them!

CF: Do you have a particular style tip that you would like to pass on to CollegeFashionistas everywhere?

MOM: I think that how you dress is an expression of yourself and your personality, so it is important to dress to suit yourself. Personal style is not about trying hard to impress other people; it is about capturing who you are and how you want to portray that to the world.

How To: There is no escaping the stripe trend at the moment, but just because something is on-trend, does not mean you have to settle for a generic look. This Fashionista proves this by teaming her oversized striped jumper with her favourite earthy colour palette. Get the perfect start to capturing her look with this navy and white striped jumper dress from Tommy Hilfiger at ASOS. Neutral, earthy shades never lose their chic, and so consider this beige trench coat from River Island an investment for all seasons, as well as the perfect complement to those stripes. Complete the casual chic look with every student’s favourite, the Converse; these brown leather sneakers are perfect to complete the outfit.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Ahra Kim

Fashionista Spotlight

Waking up to a ray of sunlight peeping through our windows is always a wonderful feeling when we're students at 'Cuse. Once I stepped out with my shades and shorts, I just automatically had a smile on my face looking forward to the 80 degree weather. What I looked forward to most was what people would wear on campus on this superb day. I strolled over to the quad and there were just so many students lying around on the grass, chatting, and hanging out, a scene in which I haven't seen for a very long time. Among the crowd, I spotted a Fashionista in a very lovely asymmetrical maxi skirt, balanced out with a simple white tank.

Name: Ahra Kim

Major: Political Science & Modern Foreign Language

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What is your favorite summer style or piece of clothing?

Ahra Kim: Sunglasses. I am obsessed with sunglasses; I have a huge collection of them and I think they can make the outfit depending on the style.

CF: If you could go to any place in the world to study the culture of their fashion, where would that be and why?

AK: India. I find the whole Bollywood concept very interesting and all their clothes and garments look very original and detailed. They have the whole henna thing which just seems very lavish and very different.

CF: Do you usually take long to figure out what to wear every day?

AK: Yes…maybe like average time I guess. I change a lot like in between.

How To: On hot days like today, Fashionistas know they can always look good and stay cool in their maxi dresses/skirts. I think it's clear enough to say that many college students have been searching for dresses lately for the summer season, after seeing a clump of Fashionistas with their pretty summer dresses on. Maxi skirts are the perfect alternative if you're not really into dresses, shorts, or miniskirts. For starters, try a simple one like this and like how today's Fashionista did, wear it with a simple tee. To style a maxi skirt, I think it's always important what you're wearing for the top. If your skirt is colorful and patterned like this one, then it's best not to overdo the top either. If your skirt is rather simple and less detailed, then go for the tops that are more exotic. Then finish off your summer dress look with some matching accessories and sandals and you will be the next Fashionista spotlight.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Danielle Bringard

Uncategorized

This week's Fashionista exudes savvy and professional style in a sea of gym shorts and sneakers. Her business casual garb is spiced up by bold accessories and an eye-catching pencil skirt, which is a classic piece for business and fun. I also love her color pairing of black and taupe, which is classy and clean. This Fashionista completes her ensemble with a pair of sleek black flats with a cute buckle that matches her silver necklace, proving that mixing business with style is never against the rules.

Name: Danielle Bringard

Major: Dramatic Art/Political Science

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your daily style?

Danielle Bringard: I'm wearing what I usually wear to work now, but it depends on the weather. Right now, I'm taking advantage of the warm weather but I work at a law office, so most days it's a combination of casual, professional and classic.

CF: What is your favorite thing in your closet?

DB: I have a lot of shoes, and one of my favorite pairs is my blue flats with sequins.

CF: Where do you get your fashion inspiration?

DB: I just go to the store and I go with whatever pops and whatever I like. I go to Forever 21 a lot and I go to Express when I can afford it.

CF: What current fashion trend is your favorite?

DB: I really like bright colors, especially when they're worn in the cold weather. It's a nice pop when it's dreary outside.

How To: This Fashionista's look can definitely be worn outside the office and can be worn from the classroom to the club. To get this Fashionista's look, pair a simple top with a classic pencil skirt. A skirt similar to this Fashionista's skirt can be found at Gap, and a pair of cute flats can be found at Bloomingdale's.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Shelby Ito

Fashionista Spotlight

This CollegeFashionista caught my eye with her indie-hippie vibe and relaxed-yet-chic style. Her weathered jeans are fitted, paired with a loose white tank on top. The loosely draped scarf provides flattering layers and a burst of color. Her laced leather combat boots have a worn texture and give her look an edge. She accessorized with hipster staples: Ray-Ban Clubmasters, bangles, and dangly earrings. This Fashionista tied her outfit together by maintaining a worn texture in her jean shorts, boots and scarf. Her gold jewelry gives a hint of glamor and pops against the rugged clothing.

Name: Shelby Ito

Major: Business

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?

Shelby Ito: I would consider my personal style simple with the occasional hint of want-to-be hipster. I like to dress up at night and stay cozy during the day.

CF: Where do you find your fashion inspiration?

SI: I love looking at the styles LF and NASTY GAL post on their websites and look-books, but for the most part, I have well-dressed friends that are constantly throwing inspiration my way.

CF: What are your wardrobe go-to pieces?

SI: Some of my go-tos are high-waisted shorts or skirts and big earrings. High waisted items hold the middle section in and give a flattering look. Big earrings glam up an outfit and tie it all in. Put the two together and you can't go wrong.

How To: To achieve this indie-hippie look, look for worn textures—ultimately choose a top and bottom that you would wear to a concert, nothing too clean and crisp. Scarves are versatile and provide layers and angles to any outfit. Be sure to stick with soft, earthy colors or patterns to avoid your scarf dominating the rest of the outfit. Take this look from relaxing to chic by wearing boots and, if you are wearing shorts, stick to shorter boots because they elongate your legs. Cover your arms in bangles of all shapes and sizes and wear bulky dangling earrings in order to attain the classic hippie look.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT

Uncategorized

When I ran into this rockin' chick last week, I just about died. How amazing is her style? She’s a pattern mixing genius with her Urban Outfitters floral maxi dress paired with a knotted cheetah top. She’s perfected her look with a clean bun sitting atop her lovely head and a black handbag featuring leather trim. I just can’t get enough. The mix of patterns is amazing and her personality is even better (if that’s possible). This girl is all about rock 'n' roll and she’s even about to make the move to LA to join a rock band. Can she be any cooler?

CollegeFashionista: What inspires your style?

Fashionista: I am really into the fashion of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. I am inspired by rock and roll and the fashion of the musicians themselves, like Axel Rose from Guns N’ Roses. To be honest, rock 'n' roll men are my true inspiration. It's kind of funny 'cause I'm all about the men.

CF: Where do you get your fashion fix?

F: I love reading The Man Repeller. She’s this awesome blogger who is all about fun and crazy fashion. And her writing is hilarious.

CF: If you could take any celebrity wardrobe, whose would you steal?

F: Juilet Simms for sure. She has a great mix of vintage and rock. I’m obsessed. Everyone needs to check her out!

How To: Maxi dresses are great summer solutions. They provide the flowing quality that every dress deserves while keeping your look trendy and so simple! No matter your style, you can make maxi dresses your own. Afraid of mixing patterns? Try a solid maxi like this asymmetrical number from Anthropologie. Or for the daring Fashionistas, try this multi colored beauty or my personal favorite, Jungle Fever by MinkPink.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Bernadette Paller

Style Advice of the Week

Just when we thought the worst of the winter blues was behind us, the clouds darken up and a cold front chills the air. I reluctantly had to drag out the coats and sweaters that I prematurely packed up and stored underneath my bed to brave the monotonous winds. I'm not sure why, but I believe there is a direct positive correlation between how dreary the weather is and how dark your clothes are. Then I saw this Fashionista. Vibrant as can be, the weather didn't affect this week's Fashionista from rocking her brightest of brights. Her teal coat was the first thing that caught my eye, and its shearling trim really added an interesting touch. Not only was her coat adorable, but she decided to pair it with canary yellow opaque tights and finished the look off with two-toned knee high boots.

Name: Bernadette Paller

Year: Senior

Major: Human Development and Family Studies

How To: I personally LOVE tights. All shapes, styles and–most of all–colors! I've been eyeing up these Modcloth tights for some time now and this week's Fashionista may make me finally purchase them. Tights are a great thing to throw on during this drabby March weather and can really add a layer of excitement to any outfit. If you really want to think out of the box, check out the thousands of hosiery options on a website called MyTights. For a colored coat, try an exciting color like this yellow French Connection coat. For a lightweight option to wear into warmer weather, a cotton double-breasted coat like this one from Zac Posen will be sure to turn some heads.
