I wouldn’t be the first nor the last to comment on the sweltering summer heat. However, amongst these tough summer days, we are graced with cloudy days and showers that require slight changes to our wardrobe. Enter: summer layering. Hot weather layering doesn’t mean turtlenecks and sleeves that sit perfectly at the wrist. But rather, lightweight fabrics like silk, chiffon and cotton. These fabrics are ideal for summer weather. From linen jackets, denim vests and pullovers, layering in the summer is easy and stylish. Style icon and Fashionista Olivia Palermo has been seen rocking summer layers with lightweight jackets like a silk blazer in Lucky Magazine. The light and simple draping did not rely on temperature and remained chic when she pushed the sleeves to her elbows. Palermo’s outfit remains seasonally appropriate even while wearing a blazer because of the dynamic and fashion forward fabric.
Cool and comfortable, this Fashionista is an ideal example of how to layer in the summer. The focal piece of the ensemble is the lightweight blue sweater. It is perfectly oversized, cozy and stylish. The Fashionista paired the billowy sweater with a white lace dress. Not only is the ensemble beautifully contrasted with other pops of color like yellow and pink, it also maintains a unique balance. This effortless ensemble is a fashion do, even in the summer, so be sure to master it regardless of temperature.
Name: Yuqiao Yuan
Year: Sophomore, Class of 2015
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?
YY: A blue sweater, white lace dress, bangles and ring from Urban Outfitters. The tote is Fossil and pink ikat TOMS shoes. I like to layer with sweaters and vests. Also, many of my dresses, like this lace one, are cinched at the waist. I like how it gives me an accented shape.
CF: What do you love about summer fashion?
YY: In the summer, your outfit should look fresh and trendy. This season is a great opportunity to try a new color palette and wearing items that make you feel great. I like wearing a few pops of bright colors during the summer.
CF: How would you describe your style?
YY: It is simple. If it is basic and comfortable, I will wear it. Also, every item I own is one color so I end up unintentionally color blocking.
CF: Where do you get your style inspiration?
YY: I look at the Urban Outfitters blog and models on other websites. I try to mimic the way they wear the clothing because it usually very fashion forward.
CF: Whose closet would you raid and why?
YY: Believe it or not, Lady Gaga. I would like to raid her closet because she is far from simple. It would be an opportunity to try something different. Her outfits always include something really strange and I think it is really interesting. Sometimes dressing out of the realm of what is “normal” can be cool.
CF: What is your key accessory must-have?
YY: I have a light wash jean vest that I wear a lot. It is the perfect accessory to throw over a dress because it is edgy and adds something extra to the outfit.
CF: What is one item in your closet you cannot live without?
YY: Flat and comfortable shoes like TOMS shoes. There are some occasions when I will wear heels but I prefer flats. Especially, as a college student I like wearing flats because I’m constantly on my feet running to class or a meeting.
How To: Ready for layers in the summer? Start off with a neutral dress as the base. Pick out a lightweight piece to wear over the dress, like this sweater or jacket. Be sure to incorporate a tote, TOMS shoes or flats, simple jewelry and sunnies.
