This energetic Fashionista from Houston, Texas is making moves on campus as 2012-2013 Miss Sophomore. Her initiative is called “Art, Power, Respect.” This Fashionista hopes that by encouraging individualistic self-expression through art she can help lessen destructive indulgences of the youth. She is also involved with Resident Hall Association and Habitat for Humanity. Thelma is very focused on her career goal of becoming a premiere talk show host.
Name: Thelma Mbaezue-Daniel
Major: Sociology With a Concentration in Broadcast Journalism
CollegeFashionista: Who or what inspires your style?
Thelma Mbaezue-Daniels: My mood always inspires my style; sometimes I’m feeling bright, which can translate into colors and patterns, while other times it’s ‘all black everything.’ My Nigerian heritage also influences certain pieces I wear such as my afrocentric accessories.
CF: What was your favorite pageant outfit you wore in the Miss Sophomore Pageant, and where did you find it?
TD: In my Miss Sophomore Pageant I really loved all my pieces, but I suppose my favorite would be my intro outfit, because it caught the attention of the audience and aligned perfectly with the theme of the show. In the pageant, each contestant was assigned an animal — mine was a snake, so I drew inspiration from the great Britney Spears. Britney’s 2001 MTV Movie Awards look for her “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance fit perfectly with my vision for my costume. I wore a royal blue and black sexy two piece top with a skirt bottom that had a slit on both sides. I even used a life size python in my intro.
CF: What celebrity of the opposite sex do you think has the best style and why?
TD: A$AP Rocky is definitely a fashion icon that has sparked my interest. I’m not saying he has the best style but I do believe his style is innovative and unique, at times his outfits even inspire mine.
CF: What are you excited to wear this season?
TD: As the new season of fashion launches with New York Fashion Week, I am truly looking forward to switching up my “swagg” to fit the new weather, but more importantly, set some new trends, so stay tuned.
CF: Who is your favorite style icon of the past?
TD: It is a fact that I am a die hard Sex and the City Fanatic so it’s only natural that my favorite style goddess is Sarah Jessica Parker. SJP’s style on the series can be credited to the show’s stylist Patricia Field, another fashion genius but its truly all about the way SJP executes the pieces. SJP owns a classic style with a fierce edge, much like her character Carrie Bradshaw. This, among other qualities, truly make her one of my fashion heroes.
How To: To get a similar look try a black split maxi dress with a sheer overlay on the bottom from Forever21. I love the pop of color of Thelma’s Dr. Martens combat boots with a matching headband. Try these boots in a different color such as purple patent with some eye-catching socks.
