Layering is a trend that can aid in the warmth and versatility of pieces you already poses in your wardrobe. It is a key element that can be used to master the art of cold weather fashion. This Fashionista has created a perfectly cohesive outfit comprised of mostly neutral colored pieces. The neutrals look more diverse because she is playing with a number of different textures. She has combined thick knits, delicate embroidery, elegant beading, soft leather and traditional denim in order to provide her outfit with wonderful fabric diversity. Texture is an element that is hard to mix properly, but this Fashionista proves that mixing it correctly can lead to a fabulous final look.
Name: Tessa Hansen
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today and where is it from?
Tessa Hansen: I’m wearing a beaded shirt from Anthropologie, which I paired with Paige Jeans and Frye boots. I continued to layer for warmth with an olive green cardigan and a fuzzy infinity scarf. Both are from Urban Outfitters. Finally, I completed my look with a unique kate spade tote, which is perfect for carrying books to class.
CF: What season is your favorite to dress for and why?
TH: My favorite fashion season is summer because it leaves me with so much room for creativity. Summer weather has the fewest restrictions when it comes to apparel, so my style changes frequently. I find it easiest to experiment with new trends during these warm months.
CF: Who are some of your style icons?
TH: My absolute favorite style icon is Lauren Conrad. Her looks are always classy, sophisticated and chic. She designs colorful, simple and couture fashion lines. Her LC collection is sold at Kohl’s, while she also produces a high-end line called Paper Crown. She has become very successful by using her fame in a positive way, and is truly a great role model and fashion icon for college-aged women.
CF: What’s your favorite spring trend and why?
TH: My eye was drawn to the embellished details on many of the statement pieces on the runway. I also love the bold floral patterns with lots of eccentric color—looks like orange really is the new black!
How To: Layering can be the perfect way to incorporate a number of different styles, while still forming a styled final look. The best place to start is with a fun statement shirt with delicate details. On top of this you can add layers of knits, including a scarf, sweater or tall socks peaking out from beneath a pair of boots. It is best to keep some pieces of your outfit basic and neutral in color, as too many statement pieces can be confusing and overwhelming. A great addition to this look would be a couple of gold rings or a gold bracelet.
