As I began walking around campus searching for Fashionistas/os, it really hit me that this was actually my last semester doing this! Since my sophomore year, I’ve enjoyed approaching random people to photograph and learn about their person styles. One of my favorite parts about being a Style Guru is running into someone I photographed over one or two years ago and noticing how much their personal style has evolved. That’s why I was so excited that I got the chance to stop this Fashionista, who was actually one of the first people I featured when we were just sophomores here at Hampton. I knew I had to use this opportunity to learn how fashion affects her today and how she believes she has evolved style wise.
Name: Taylor Pinckney
Major: Public Relations
CollegeFashionista: Do you believe that fashion has a major impact on your life?
Taylor Pinckney: Definitely. At a young age I kind of developed this passion for fashion by indulging in magazines such as Teen Vogue and Seventeen, dreaming that one day I would be in one of them. I’ve always loved clothes and shopping so I think my love of fashion just came naturally.
CF: What is your favorite trend this winter?
TP: Definitely a dope coat. On Black Friday I scored a really cool black coat with a big collar and leather sleeves. I’ve been wearing it non-stop ever since.
CF: If you could sit down and have lunch with one person in the fashion industry, who would it be and why?
TP: I would have to go with Cosmopolitan’s Fashion Market Director Shiona Turini. She’s inspired me so much as an African American woman who has had a lot of success in the fashion industry. I admire her work ethic, and her style is phenomenal. She’s also a Hampton University alum!
CF: How do you feel your major has contributed to your love of fashion?
TP: I’ve been blessed with opportunities during college such as interning for Gucci and volunteering for New York Fashion Week. These experiences have increased my passion and love for fashion and given me the confidence to pursue working in this industry.
CF: How do you believe your style has evolved from freshman year to now in your senior year?
TP: I think that my style has definitely matured and shows an accurate reflection of who I am today. As a freshman I was still trying to figure out who I was as a person and experimenting style wise with different trends.
How To: I felt quite a chic, equestrian vibe from this Fashionista’s look. Feeling inspired and want to recreate this outfit? First you need the perfect pair of knee-high boots. These are not only stylish but perfect for winter. A structured peacoat with large buttons is also a vital part of this look. Lastly, this outfit would be nothing without awesome accessories. This Fashionista’s black cap and tan scarf really help complete this entire look.
