It’s no surprise that I nearly accosted today’s Fashionista upon seeing her on the way to class during this first week of school. In other words, the one week out of the entire year where you can find someone in something other than a frat tank and lululemon leggings. The black and white trend took the fashion world by storm last spring and you could hardly turn a corner in your favorite mall without seeing those bizarre referee pants (I’m sorry, but I still don’t get it). Granted, black clothing has been a staple item in itself since the 14th century when the @badgalriri of that generation decided to defy social norms and make a statement by wearing it. I looked it up and I’m pretty sure it slowly evolved over time as a symbol of power and dignity because some Duke in northern Italy decided he and his court should wear it…but I’ll probably stick with my version of the story.
Nevertheless, the color black has remained the one thing in the history of fashion to never go out of style. So imagine our luck when designers made black and white a thing this season, giving us all an excuse to wear the most slimming color while not looking like we still shop at Hot Topic.
Name: Sydney Appel
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Sydney Appel: Both my black tank top and high-waisted black/white skirt were purchased from NASTY GAL.
CF: What is your style influenced by?
SA: I’m from New York City which is a fashion hub in itself. You could say I get a lot of style ideas from the people I see on the streets. It’s kind of an anything goes type of deal, especially if it’s black.
CF: Describe the ideal fall outfit at the University of Florida.
SA: The heat is brutal during the early months of fall so in this case, less is more. The perfect daytime outfit would either be a simple cotton dress or high-waisted shorts with a tucked in tank top. If you’re going out at night, I recommend a high-wasited skirt with either a tucked in tank top or a crop top.
CF: Where do you shop?
SA: NASTY GAL, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and sometimes thrift shops.
How to: Since black and white are both essential colors for any wardrobe, I highly recommend that you invest in a two-toned skirt. Pair the skirt with a black tank top, similar to today’s Fashionista’s, and you’ve got yourself the perfect outfit for a night out.
