As September begins in the capital, the weather has gone from manageable to miserable. Yet, believe it or not, fall looms around the corner, bringing an abundance of sweater and jean combinations to the forefront of every Fashionista/o’s closet. However, until the unearthing of piles of wool and cashmere commences, Fashionistas and Fashionistos alike attempt to beat the heat while avoiding the all too familiar tank top and shorts routine.
This Fashionista demonstrates her ability to stay cool while at the same time portraying her unique fashion sense and love of color. Donning a cobalt blue maxi with gold accessories and her David Yurman ring, this George Washington University sophomore stays cool and comfortable, without sacrificing her personal style.
Name: Silvia Sclafani
Major: International Affairs
CollegeFashionista: Describe your style in three words.
Silvia Sclafani: Fun, girly and colorful.
CF: What inspires your fashion choices?
SS: I would say I’m inspired by my mom’s fashion choices. She’s very much the type of person who wears what she wants and she has raised me to dress up for every occasion. I dress based on my mood while adding a colorful flair to everything.
CF: Where do you like to shop?
SS: I think mostly I shop at Bloomingdale’s, they have a big selection so they have clothes for every occasion.
CF: How do you dress for the always unpredictable D.C. weather?
SS: I usually like to pair jeans with a colorful top and wedges. I also really like wearing dresses as well as rompers because you can dress them up or down. I can pair them easily with sweaters or a blazer. If it’s cold in the morning, I can shed those layers if and when it warms up.
CF: What fall trend are you most excited about?
SS: I love the riding boots look. It’s one of my favorite things in the fall!
How To: This Fashionista uses her lightweight maxi skirt to add variety to the predictable outfits that scatter the streets of Washington D.C. Try this bright, semi-sheer maxi skirt with a plain crop top from Brandy Melville. Or opt for a more neutral maxi skirt, like this almond colored one from Splendid, and pair it with a bright blue T-shirt like this one from C&C California. To complete the look or to bring it from day to night, add gold jewelry and a pair of sky-high wedges. The key to beating the heat is to find a maxi skirt that breathes and won’t cling to your legs as the temperature warms up throughout the day.
