Fashionista Spotlight

Leather, whether it be a little or a lot, makes a fashion statement no matter how you wear it. Leather has to power to be cutting edge alone, but paired appropriately, it can turn an otherwise feminine outfit into one that blurs the line between girly and tough. This week’s Fashionista knows all about creating a style which can be tough and ladylike at the same time. If that’s a mix you’re trying to master this season, keep reading!

Name: Sam Shafer

Major: Political Science and Peace Studies

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Sam Shafer: I’m wearing a shirt from a boutique in New York City, where there is only one of every item. I’m also wearing a Sandro skirt, Dolce Vita shoes, a bracelet from LF and a bracelet from Cambodia.

CF: If you had to label your style, what would you name it and why?

SS: I would label my style as tastefully edgy, yet classy. My closet consists of mostly solid colors with a lot of earrings and bracelets. However, most importantly, I love a great pair of funky shoes.

CF: How do you incorporate leather into your wardrobe?

SS: I incorporate it by picking one part of my outfit to be leather. I think it’s the perfect touch for fall. The perfect outfit for me this season is a crisp white shirt, a plaid skirt, a leather jacket and ankle booties. Other than my leather jacket, I incorporate leather by wearing leather jewelry, boots or shorts. Great color leathers for fall are black, brown, red and blue.

CF: This outfit is a prime example of feminine grunge. What advice do you have for fashionistas trying to create similar looks?

SS: My advice for Fashionistas is to mix all different styles together to get the perfect look! A nice leather jacket is always great to add on top of any outfit, no matter how girly it may be. I also have a leather skirt that I pair with booties to look more grunge, but then almost always wear a flowy blouse on top to get the best of both worlds.

How To: A short, flared leather skirt is the perfect combination of cute and edgy. Try this one from H&M that works for day or night. Pair this skirt with boots that are equally as rough and tough. To balance grunge with feminine, try adding a light colored blouse that can be tucked into the skirt. If you’re not feeling girly enough, wear a ladylike handbag or even try a top knot bun for something pretty and different!
