Fashionista Spotlight

While an enduring spring style guide would include florals and pastels, it’s now time to start dusting off your fringe handbags, embroidered tops and knitted ponchos to create the perfect boho chic outfit. Even though it is our first instinct to brazenly ditch our warm weather gear, this Fashionista mastered the art of a fabulous bohemian ensemble by combining her booties and pants with her hippie-inspired dyed tunic. So, if you gravitate more towards the Jane Birkin meets Kate Moss look, take note from what this Fashionista had to say about her style here!

Name: Riane Yates

Major: Urban Studies and Planning

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today and where is it from?

Riane Yates: Today I am wearing a shirt from Free People, black velvet skinny jeans from Gap, dark brown ankle booties from Urban Outfitters and a long necklace from Strut.

CF: How has coming to college changed the way you dress?

RY: Coming to college, as cliché as it may sound, allowed me to truly dress however I wanted. The University of Texas enrolls over 50,000 students each semester, which as anyone can imagine provided for a vast range of clothing and fashion choices. College provided an atmosphere for creativity and risk when it came to my fashion choices, as well as throughout the rest of my life. There were no more dress codes or strict social stigmas surrounding clothing. No matter what ensemble I choose for my outfit on any given day there was sure to be many others on campus or in Austin with a more edgy, progressive or chic look. I’m never afraid to try something new now that I’m in college and that has really allowed me to find what fits me best.

CF: Who or what influences your style choices?

RY: Currently my major fashion influences are designers Rachel Zoe, Chiara Ferragni, Cydney Morris and Dallas Wand and bloggers Julie Sariñana and Jessica Stein. As a side note to my style influences, I am an avid traveler and I love learning about and experiencing other cultures. I think how style and culture coalesce is truly remarkable and I try to do just that in my personal style by combining influences from my travels into my clothing choices.

CF: If you were given money for a shopping spree, where would you go and why?

RY: How can I choose just one place! If I were given money to go on a shopping spree I would run to West Village in NYC and work my way over to the fashion boutiques and vintage shops in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This way, I could cover all my favorite styles and places, and hopefully find some new stores in one trip.

How To: In planning your spring wardrobe, take some hints from this Fashionista by pairing some cute booties with a fringe poncho and leggings. If you’re looking for some extra accessories, seek out some beaded earrings or a headwrap for the finishing touches!
