After an amazing freshman year at the University of Michigan, I’m back in my hometown of Washington, D.C. for a few months. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, D.C. gets about as hot and humid as possible in the summer months, but May is always spectacular. So, ’tis the perfect season for fashion in D.C. right now! This week, I spotted this fancy Fashionista on her way to Sunday brunch in downtown Alexandria, a small, neighboring city in Virginia.
Name: Rachel Jenkins
CollegeFashionista: Which three words best describe your personal style and why?
Rachel Jenkins: First, I would say retro because I love wearing things that have a bit of a vintage look to them. Next, I’d probably say bohemian because I like wearing things that are flowy and delicate, but that still make a statement. Lastly, I’d say casual because I always try to maintain a good balance between comfort and style.
CF: How has your style evolved since beginning college?
RJ: Since starting college, I think my personal style has become more mature. I’m always getting ideas from other girls I see on campus, so that has influenced how I dress to some extent, but I also have been trying to make sure I always look put-together and grown-up since you never know who you could meet on any given day!
CF: Which store do you shop at the most and why?
RJ: The store I frequent the most is definitely T.J. Maxx. It’s super inexpensive and you can always find trendy things in there no matter where you go. Plus, every T.J. Maxx is a little bit different, so you never know what you’ll find.
CF: What spring trend are you most excited to try this season?
RJ: Personally, I really like halter tops and I’m sure I’ll be wearing lots of them this season, especially because I think they’re so flattering. I’ve noticed a lot of stores carrying lace halter tops which I love because they’re the perfect mix between summery and elegant. I also like wearing halter maxi dresses since you can dress them up or down depending on the occasion.
How To: To get this Fashionista’s perfect Sunday brunch look, a springy shift dress is an absolute necessity. For a casual brunch, look to wear a bright floral shift, but if you need something fancier, try a white, lacy shift just like this Fashionista had on. For your feet, go for either a pair of white sandals or some cute cork wedges. If you want to add a few accessories, try a mini purse with a chain strap or a pastel statement necklace.
