After finals, most of us college students leave campus for our ever-coveted winter break, returning home with suitcases packed to the brim with bulky outerwear and lots of layering pieces. So, when Mother Nature grants us a day of higher-than-normal temperatures, trying to stay on trend and in season while preparing for balmier weather can be challenging. However, when a warm front hit her hometown, this Fashionista didn’t shy away from shedding sweaters and snow boots during her “break from winter,” trading in her normal outerwear for a stylish vest-flannel combination coupled with skinny jeans, leather lace-up boots and a stylish wristlet.

Major: Media Studies
CollegeFashionista: What inspired this look?
Paige Roddey: This outfit was inspired by comfort! Everyone loves a good flannel, and when topped with a puffy vest, it’s the perfect balance of comfort and style.
CF: What is your favorite piece that you bought for this winter?
PR: My favorite piece that I bought for winter is the vest I’m wearing now. Not only is it my favorite color, but it goes with blue jeans, black jeans and leggings. It’s also not too puffy, so I can still pair it with a scarf or a necklace.
CF: What is your go-to outfit for a cold day on campus?
PR: For a cold winter day, my go-to outfit is my brown riding boots, a comfy pair of jeans, a warm sweater and a patterned scarf to dress it up! Sometimes I throw my brown winter barn jacket over top to keep extra warm. If I’m going out and need a bag, I always resort to a cross-body purse so I can be hands free but still have easy access.
CF: What is your favorite store to shop at on a college budget?
PR: The J.Crew Factory store! Since I can’t afford normal J.Crew, I go to the outlet where everything is on sale. They have great staple items for everyone’s closet and statement pieces that jazz up any outfit.
CF: Do you feel that the various trends you’ve seen around campus this semester have influenced your personal style?
PR: Since starting college, I think my style has gotten more edgy. My roommate’s style contrasts with mine, but we wear a lot of each other’s clothes, so her taste has definitely rubbed off on me. I’ve noticed more of the clothes I have been buying are darker, earthier tones, so now I’ve hit the cross between preppy and edgy.
How To: To channel this Fashionista’s perfect mix of prep and edge, start from the top and work your way down. To add a pop of color to your outfit, opt for a vibrant button-down or a printed long-sleeve to wear under your vest. Then, pair your shirt with a neutral, quilted vest to contrast with the bright colors. Add your favorite skinny jeans, slide on some boots and be on your way!
