It’s Drake Relays season, our campuses biggest event of the year! Athletes from across the country come to compete, and the events last all day and all night. Despite the chilly temperatures, Relays is a time for bro tanks, Nike shorts and flip flops. Consequently, our once fashionable campus turns into a mass of sweats. Running around from the fieldhouse to the commons to Greek Street can be exhausting, and doing it in heels? Ain’t nobody got time for that!
I spotted this Fashionista, Olivia Albers, after class, she stood out right away in the sea of sweatshirts. Her adorable, sparkly peplum shirt, studded J.Crew belt and leopard flats (which can be purchased at Target!) screamed preppy and girly — two of my favorite things. After talking with her I figured out how she managed to look so cute while the temptation to pull on a tank was so strong — she works for Better Homes and Gardens! Olivia’s eye for style comes naturally, and she’s definitely putting it to good use. If you find yourself stuck in a fashion rut, take a note from Olivia and add a little embellishment, detailing and peplum to your wardrobe.
Name: Olivia Albers
Major: Magazine Journalism
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?
Olivia Albers: I would define my personal style as pretty classic. I like to incorporate trends when I can, but I try not to get too caught up in them. My mom has always told me to spend money on classic pieces that will last forever.
CF: Who would you consider to be your style icon?
OA: My style icons include Audrey Hepburn (she made skinny jeans and flats a classic), every single J.Crew model and Olivia Palermo (she is stylish in whatever she puts on).
CF: What is your ideal outfit?
OA: My go-to outfit is a button down shirt tucked in and belted with skinny jeans. There are so many ways to dress that look up and down.
CF: Who is your favorite designer?
OA: Hmm….other than the designers for J.Crew I would have to go with Burberry. Who else can make a trench coat stand the test of time? Plus their fragrances, scarves and bags are to die for.
CF: Finally, what is one trend you’re really excited about this spring?
OA: For this spring/summer I am obsessing over Kate Spade’s line of Keds. The traditional shoes have a clever spin with her patterns.
How To: To get out of your daily sweatpants routine and into something a little more fashionable start with a basic skinny jean. Add a peplum top (the cutest shape of them all!), and a bright belt (because nothing is more preppy than color-blocking!) Finish with a bold pair of flats and a bow for good measure.
