The oxblood trend exploded throughout the fashion industry the last few months and it’s still going strong! Seen on prim frocks, luxurious leather accessories and nail art galore, oxblood is a versatile contender in the color wheel. However, as we all know, due to its trendy nature, it will soon fall away like all its predecessors. So how does one make timely use of the beautifully rich hue? I looked to this Fashionista for help in taking on one of fashion’s most brilliant and bold colors.
Name: Nicolette Battista
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Nicolette Battista: I got the oxblood shorts for Christmas from my mom; they’re from Forever 21. The thin belt and combat boots are also from Forever 21 and my top is from a store called Fashion 21. My pleather jacket is from T.J.Maxx.
CF: I love the way you styled the oxblood shorts with clean neutral pieces! How would you suggest Fashionistas in colder climates incorporate the oxblood trend into their winter wardrobe?
NB: I would take a solid oxblood piece like a blouse or skirt and just pile on the layers! A great heavy coat along with some warm tights or leggings would warm you up instantly. I’d also keep the color palette along the neutral and monochromatic side and stick with the basics!
CF: How do you define your personal style?
NB: I think my style is a little bit of everything. Depending on the day and how I feel is what I choose to wear. Sometimes I dress a little bohemian or kind of rocker. I like taking the basics in my closet and pairing them with other classic pieces for an overall polished look. I also try not to spend too much money on clothing; I call it affordable chic.
CF: What are your favorite brands for casual and comfortable wardrobe essentials?
NB: Even though the quality isn’t incredible, I love shopping at Forever 21. They have an amazing selection and it’s always right on trend!
CF: You have a knack for great thrifty finds! Can you give us some tips on finding amazing pieces that are still affordable?
NB: When I enter a store, I usually go straight to the sale section! You really have to be open minded about finding affordable pieces; not have anything specific in mind is also helpful. That way, you can discover a great find that fits your style but won’t empty your wallet!
CF: As you mentioned before, your style is a fantastic mix of several different elements. Who are your favorite designers that you look to for inspiration?
NB: I absolutely love Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen, Rodarte, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou and Marchesa. I love the ethereality of Elie Saab and Marchesa, the daring elegance of Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane, and the eclecticism of Rodarte and Mary Katrantzou. I think all the designers behind these labels are geniuses; their creativity and passion really shines through their garments.
How To: Start with an oxblood blouse and pair it with a neutral toned skirt and tights or long pants for more coverage. Bundle up with a thick wool coat and add some flair to your look with a heeled take on the classic combat boot!
