To me, footwear makes or breaks an outfit. Even with my shoe obsession, I never thought I’d see a day when I’d approve of high top sneakers. But when I started seeing stars such as Beyoncé, Miranda Kerr and Kate Moss in them, they suddenly became much more appealing. Since becoming addicted, I naturally had to stop a fellow student who seemed to have the same passion. Not only was she wearing high tops, but hers were a perfect pattern that I could tell somehow go with just about anything.
Name: Nicole McGrew
Major: Journalism and Strategic Communications
CollegeFashionista: Explain your personal style.
Nicole McGrew: I don’t know, I like to be unique. I don’t like to look the same as everyone else. I love Free People. My dream job would be to work at Free People. In the summer, I like wearing lots of dresses.
CF: Is there a celebrity whose style really inspires you?
NM: I love Rihanna’s style, she’s so cool. And then I love Miley Cyrus. She turned around and became really unusual.
CF: Where do you usually shop?
NM: I love Urban Outfitters. I work at Fortuity down on Massachusetts Street and we have a variety of things for anyone, because my style’s pretty different. I love Third Planet down on Mass St. and Forever 21 a lot too.
CF: I love your shoes. Where did you find such beauties?
NM: I got them at Forever 21! I’ve been waiting for the snow to melt to be able to wear them.
How to: To nail Nicole’s free spirted style, all the fun to be had is with the accessories. Begin at the bottom with a pair of patterened sneakers. These high tops from Zara can be worn with just about anything. That’s the beauty about leopard. Warm up while walking to class with some funky Kate Spade mittens or a chunky, patterned scarf. As for the clothes, keep it casual on top with a graphic tee and military inspired jacket, just like Nicole did. Finish with a pair of simple jeans and you’re fashionably set.
