I spotted this Fashionista walking past our football stadium. I’m always a big fan of boots, no matter what the weather entails. Combat boots are especially useful when you want to balance out the femininity of your outfit with some edginess. She mentioned that she had attended Teen Vogue Fashion University in New York two summers ago. Who says summer school has to be boring?
Name: Nicole Girten
Major: Editing, Writing and Media
CollegeFashionista: Describe your style.
Nicole Girten: I think the most important thing about style is that it is authentic. Clothes should showcase the woman/man in them. I gravitate towards pieces that fit my body type and my aesthetic. I try to avoid “trendy” pieces and opt more for classic staples that will last. I love neutrals since they go with everything and you can get a lot of wear out of them without necessarily repeating outfits. However, I will say I’m a sucker for a printed pant. I always wear cardigans since I tend to get cold. I feel like it “finishes” a look. When in doubt: less is more.
CF: What is your favorite line for fall 2014?
NG: Elie Saab just knows how to dress women. The entire collection was flawless!
CF: Where does your inspiration come from?
NG: I started working for a jewelry designer in high school and her personal style is what trained my eye in fashion, and my aesthetic kind of spring-boarded from there. I love streetwear and seeing how people make unique sartorial choices to fit their personal style. Women who have confidence in the way they dress always inspire me, even if my own style differs from theirs—women who wear the clothes instead of letting clothes wear them. A few of my favorite bloggers are Blair Eadie, Nicole Warne and Chiara Ferragni. I also love me some Alexa Chung, and Emma Watson can do no wrong!
CF: What is your favorite statement piece?
NG: A pair of champagne quartz earrings I bought while working at the jewelry boutique. They add a lot of sparkle without it dominating or overwhelming whatever I’m wearing, and the neutral tone of the gemstones lets me wear them with almost anything—definitely my glamour go-to piece.
How To: Skater skirts are a flattering silhouette on almost any body type. They accentuate the waist and elongate your legs. Bright colored skirts are a fun pop of color to offset black accessories. A small clutch purse is another staple in any Fashionista’s wardrobe, especially for a night out. They hold the essentials: phone, keys, cash, mints and lipstick. If you’re up in ‘da club toting around a bag that could hold a small child, you may be doing it wrong. Opt for the clutch!
