This week, as I fell in love with everything that came down the runway for spring 2014, I realized that perhaps living in a city where I can experience all four seasons isn’t too bad after all. Having been mesmerized by the artistry of each designer, I was determined to take my inspiration and translate it into my wardrobe. I couldn’t wait to sport Fendi’s peachy shades with gray despite Toronto’s icy chills and Rachel Zoe’s beautiful silk pant suit reminded me that army green is always a go to regardless of season. And whilst my dresser drawers are stocked with high street’s essential bib necklaces and coloured gemstones neck pieces, I just couldn’t get over my love affair with Rodarte’s and Dolce&Gabanna’s one of a kind jewelry and was already frantically searching for a budget friendly buy.
And then I met Negin. Styled in one of the most eye-catching high street adornments I had seen in a while, I realized she had done it! Paired effortlessly with a gray knit with a peachy hued stripe and army green trousers, she transformed some of my favorite (and her favorite too, obviously) spring gear into a chic winter ensemble.
Name: Negin Khorram
Major: Political Science and Sociology
College Fashionista: What are you wearing today?
Negin Khorram: My coat is from Danier, sweater from Gap, pants from Bershka, scarf and necklace from Topshop, boots from Michael Kors and of course, my backpack is Jansport, but the University of Toronto edition.
CF: So you mentioned you grew up in Dubai. Would you say adjusting your style was difficult?
NK: In the first year, I used to feel really cold, but now I think I’ve adjusted. I think my style has stayed the same. I think my style is edgy and coming to Toronto, maintaining that style wasn’t hard.
CF: Do you have summer pieces that you can transform into winter pieces?
NK: I would say my favorite summer piece that I love to wear in winter would be a pair of light wash, ripped jeans. In the summertime, I would wear with flats whereas in the winter, I would pair them with a leather jacket and combat boots. And jewelry. I love finding quirky pieces that can jazz up an outfit, like my rings or an interesting necklace.
CF: What would you say are your top choices for the winter season?
NK: I love beanies and tuques except I love seeing them on other people, not on me. Besides that, as I mentioned before, I love leather and I wear dark colors a lot. In fact, I don’t mind masculine fitted clothes because I enjoy being able to give it my own feminine twist. For example, a simple men’s plaid shirt can be layered in the winter or transformed into a cute dress with a belt in the summer.
CF: What would your favorite brands to shop at be and why?
NK: I love to shop at Marc Jacobs because they have the best bags! But clothing wise, I love Topshop because their stuff is always recent, trendy and got a hipster vibe to it. I also like to shop at Medocino, their stuff is easy going and and have classic pieces that you can wear in all different ways. I love to shop at Zara! They have different sections depending on what kind of vibe you’re going for and you can always mix and match!
How To: Love her look? Don’t be afraid to mix and match prints like she did with her scarf and her sweater. Try to go for two subtle prints such as this polka-dotted sweater with this cute Lady Liberty scarf. Also don’t be afraid to wear both the scarf and the necklace, perhaps something simple like this crescent necklace shall be a good add on. And of course, it’s all about having a stylish but long lasting coat and a comfortable pair of boots to get you through the season.
