What better way to ward off the winter blues than with a bunch of winter brights? This Fashionista goes across the color wheel from the blue sky and her chambray shirt with a traffic-stopping red sweater and its dynamic pattern. Her outfit shows how colors don’t necessarily have to match, but rather go together. The chambray underneath her sweater makes her extra cozy and also extra stylish giving her look a unique edge among too-often drab winter styles.

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Michaela McInerney: The sweater, button-down and headband are from J.Crew. The pants are American Eagle Outfitters. The boots are L.L.Bean and the ring is from a store in Nantucket called Blue Beetle.
CF: What was the inspiration for your outfit today?
MM: The sweater I am wearing is my favorite one I own because it’s so classic but the colors also make it really different. It definitely makes a statement. I love the way brighter colors look with chambray shirts so that is why I paired it with the button-down. The pants are just your classic black jeans. I like American Eagle Outfitters jeans though because they make them in a shorter length, which is really helpful for me. The boots are my fall go-to, I wear them almost everyday. Then I love monograms and bows, probably too much, so I picked the ring and the headband.
CF: Who is your style icon?
MM: My style icon is definitely Audrey Hepburn. She is so timeless. Then Sarah Vickers from the blog Classy Girls Wear Pearls is another one. All my friends tell me that I am really preppy, which is true, but in general I just like to go for a more classic look with one or two interesting pieces so they really stand out.
CF: What is the most challenging aspect of winter fashion, and how are you confronting that?
MM: I love wearing bright colors in thicker fabrics for the winter like yellow corduroys or this orange sweater. When it’s super cold out sometimes I don’t even want to go outside but putting on fun colors and patterns always helps. And for me, I always have trouble with boots. It is hard to find a pair that is warm enough and I like how they look. I really love these L.L.Bean Boots because they are two-tone so they go with a lot and they are perfect for the weather right now.
How To: Cozy and creative sweaters are all the rage especially as the Christmas season hits full swing. Find one that incorporates vibrant colors that complement your skin tone and closet, but add this Fashionista’s twist with a chambray shirt underneath. Keep it simple with dark or black jeans and short brown boots. For a little sparkle, try a long gold necklace, casual leather watch and a patterned headband.
