50 Shades of Gray menswear is the way to go for this Fashionista. She defies the cold with a look that could have easily been thrown right into the Viktor & Rolf fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection. Pairing a gray overcoat with a simple charcoal V-neck and a black scarf, she couples tailored shorts, tights and speckled knee-high socks with black oxfords. Check out how today’s Fashionista tackles menswear in her stylish ensemble!
Name: Maya Swan
Major: Fashion Merchandising
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?
Maya Swan: I just dress to how I feel. I feel like people say that a lot, but it is kind of true. If I feel like being girly one day, I will. If I feel like being androgynous one day, I will just go for that. I dress for my mood, what I have and the weather.
CF: How do you style menswear looks into your feminine wardrobe?
MS: I like to take the best of any aspect of fashion that I like, and I just wear it. It does not matter if it is menswear or womenswear, but I do like the oversized feel that menswear has. Especially in coats, because I like to be comfortable; if you have a coat over your outfit, you do not want it to be tight or constricting. I like to wear oversized blazers and coats— things like that.
CF: How do you manage to stay fashionable on cold days like today?
MS: I like to have a nice base, whether that is a pair of jeans, leggings or tights. Then, I just build on that. I will put on a sweater, boots and a nice coat. I just like to layer; layering is my essential thing for staying warm and fashionable.
How To: Make a statement by morphing menswear staples into your wardrobe! To recreate this Fashionista’s look, try pairing a minimal style gray overcoat with a basic, charcoal V-neck and tweed shorts. Are you aiming for more than solid subtlety? Pair some vibrant oxfords for a jolt of contrasting color.
