I’ve seen this Fashionista walking around campus a few times — her signature flower headbands make her hard to miss — but I didn’t get a chance to stop her until a few days ago. I’m so glad I finally met her because her personality is as great as her incredible style. She looks like she walked right out of a Free People catalog, but what’s even more powerful is the confidence she has to rock such a bold look every day. Like what you see? Lucky for us, she’s putting her style smarts into her very own soon-to-be-launched accessory line.
Name: Mary Jackson
Major: Fashion Design and Studio Art
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Mary Jackson: My dress is from Forever 21, my shawl is from a boutique in my hometown, my socks and jewelry are from Free People, my shoes are TOMS shoes and I made my flower headband.
CF: How would you describe your style?
MJ: My style is very bohemian and free spirited. I also really like lace.
CF: What are some of your favorite stores?
MJ: I often shop at Free People, Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. I also really like small boutiques and vintage shops. I’m a huge fan of Cactus Flower in Bloomington, Indiana.
CF: Tell us about your flower headbands!
MJ: I started making these flower headbands about a year and a half ago. I made one and then absolutely loved it so I started making more. I just use hot glue and fake flowers from places like JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts. I started wearing them everyday and now people are surprised if I’m not wearing one. I’m in the process of making an Etsy page to sell the headbands because other people have shown a lot of interest in them. My flower headbands are probably my favorite things to wear because they kind of put the rest of my outfit together.
CF: How do you gain the confidence to have such a stand out style?
MJ: I never liked wearing the same thing as everyone else. I don’t like going with the flow; I like creating my own path.
How To: The first step to achieving this Fashionista’s style is shedding all inhibitions about going all out with your look. The base of your outfit should be a light and airy like this ethereal lace dress in a faded mint color from Free People. Layer on several necklaces of varying lengths and materials, but be sure they are all a neutral shade. Forever 21 has a page dedicated to inexpensive bohemian baubles. Keep on hand — or shoulders — a knit shawl like this one from Neiman Marcus to add both another texture to your look and to protect from spring chills. Don’t forget your flower headband! Until this Fashionista’s Etsy page is launched, you can get several kinds of fun floral headpieces from this Urban Outfitters.
