FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Margaret Miller

Fashionista Spotlight

The transformation we undergo between high school and college is a truly remarkable journey (I really hope you can hear the sarcasm in my voice). My awkward side-bangs and brace-face years (yikes) are something I would be perfectly content never, EVER reliving. The personal growth we go through from teens to young adults, emphasis on the young, allows so much change in our style as we become more comfortable in expressing ourselves. Looking back to last year as a baby “freshie,” I had no clue what my own style was. Over the past year I can already sense a change for the better as I am leaving my teenage years behind and approaching life as an upperclassman (terrifying, I know). This Fashionista knows all about finding and defining herself in college, as she created a style all her own by knowing what she wants and never holding back. Embrace change and let your wardrobe evolve with you!

Name: Margaret Miller

Major: Government with a minor in Spanish

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How has your style changed since starting college?

Margaret Miller: My style has changed a lot! I went to a high school with a very strict dress code so I was used to dressing up for class. I remember one time my freshman year, a fellow classmate turned to me and told me it was the first time she had seen me wearing jeans to class…yikes. I have definitely become more daring and experimental with my style.

CF: What trends are you excited for this spring?

MM: I love the fringe bag trend. Valentino’s collection of vibrant colored clutches—they’re very funky and have that boho summer vibe (one can dream). I also am thankful that sneakers are here to stay. In my mind, comfort and swag trump stilettos any day. Last, but certainly not least, the epic return of the Birkenstock.

CF: What have been your most recent additions to your closet?

MM: My Sandro coat is a new staple. I waited for the post-holiday sales, which was very much worth it. However, my most favorite recent addition, which is more of an obsession than a staple, is my new Liquid Silver Nike Dunks. I went through great lengths for those puppies and they’re something else. I like to tease my dad that they’re a work of art.

CF: What is the best style advice you ever received?

MM: Probably that “trends come and go but that personal style is forever” and “it can speak to who you are and how you’re remembered.” My grandmother was known for wearing vibrant floral and leopard prints and loud costume jewelry. My dad (her son) is known for his brightly colored socks and bow ties. I think that kind of personal style is admirable!

How To: Snatch this Fashionista’s favorite coat and layer it with a thick cozy sweater like this one. Complete the look with these over the knee boots, violet gloves and tortoise shell sunglasses.
