Fashionista Spotlight

I must admit an embarrassing amount of my time is spent shopping online, unleashing my pent up frivolity into cyberspace. I frequently shop NASTY GAL to observe the edgiest of trends and to gaze in wonder at those signature Jeffrey Campbell shoes. This Fashionista embodies that playful, modern edge that NASTY GAL has mastered so well.

Name: Mal Lee

Major: Editing, Writing & Media Communication Studies

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How does fashion impact you in your life?

Mal Lee: I would say fashion impacts me everyday in my creating of an outfit. I truly believe fashion to be an expressive art form, so when I’m getting dressed in the morning I’m not so much trying to look “cute,” as I am just dressing how I feel that particular day.

CF: What trends are you seeing emerge for spring 2014?

ML: As for trends; leather! Every runway has had some sort of meshing of masculine (black, leather, boxy shapes) with feminine (transparent fabrics, light colors).

CF: You described your style as “man repellent.” What are your thoughts regarding high fashion and men—mix or clash?

ML: I’m an über feminist when it comes to high fashion and men. Wear what you want to wear no matter how crazy, and screw everyone else.

How To: To get this Fashionista’s look here are a few things to keep in mind: (1) Take the adjective “cute” out of your fashion vocabulary. (2) Remind yourself in the getting ready process that you’re dressing to please you, and you only. (3) Any psychedelic alien shades or jewelry resembling violent weaponry are encouraged. A little purple lipstick never hurt either.
