Fashionista Spotlight

While I personally don’t think 50 degrees Fahrenheit is warm enough to go outside and tan, some students at Michigan would beg to differ. At long last, spring is in the air and I think it’s safe to say that most of us in Ann Arbor have a serious case of spring fever. But, while warmer weather has finally arrived, we don’t have to give up layering quite yet. Spotted on the Diag on a busy April afternoon, this Fashionista masters the art of mixing cozy winter pieces with lighter spring pieces to create the perfect on-the-go outfit.

Name: Mackenna Bell

Major: Environmental Engineering

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Mackenna Bell: I would say my style is pretty simple, but is also unique. For the most part, I wear fairly neutral colors and then add accessories. Sometimes my style can be a little edgy, but mostly you’ll find me in leggings and sweaters.

CF: Who is the style icon that you look up to the most and why?

MB: I can’t really say I look up to anyone specific when it comes to picking out my clothes, but if I had to choose one person whose style I admire, I’d probably go with Emma Watson. She always looks so classy and put-together no matter what she has on.

CF: Which trends are you most excited to try out this spring?

MB: Wedges! You can never have too many shoes, and I always buy new ones come spring time. I’m all excited for all kinds of skirts and dresses. I love dressing up, but it’s close to impossible when the temperature drops as low as it does in Michigan.

CF: What are the three stores you shop at the most and why?

MB: My number one store is Urban Outfitters. Although it’s fairly expensive, I’m a regular in their sale section and I love most everything they sell. My second favorite store is actually a thrift store back home in Pittsburgh called Avalon Exchange. I find so many awesome clothes and accessories there for such great prices. Lastly, Nordstrom is probably my third favorite store. They have tons of brands to choose from, plus their shoe department is amazing.

How To: If you’re looking to achieve this Fashionista’s balance between edgy and chic, start with a cropped knit sweater. Over top, layer on a chunky knit cardigan to help keep you cozy. For your bottom half, opt for plain jeans or leggings so you can stay comfy all day long. Lastly, for your feet, stick with white high tops for a clean and classic look, or try printed Keds to add a pop of color.
