It’s cold in Utrecht lately. I mean very cold. I mean wearing socks and leggings and then another pair of socks and a jacket and a shirt and a scarf cold. Often, layering clothing in cold weather can quickly turn from putting on a variety of fashionable pieces to looking like you rolled around in your closet and came out looking like the Michelin man. I can always appreciate someone who can layer pieces in a creative and stylish way – all while remaining warm. I spotted this Fashionista walking to class and immediately appreciated the different layers to her outfit. Together, they created a unique and quirky look, which was perfect for a cold, snow-covered campus.
Name: Laurence Herfs
College Fashionista: How would you describe your style?
Laurence Herfs: I guess my style now is a combination of the Japanese cute-girls fashion scene mixed with western influence. It’s still sorta geeky, but quirky and whimsical clothes just make me really happy, even if they’re a bit silly.
CF: What is your favorite item to wear lately?
LH: When I visited London last month, I found the most adorable panda hat. I wore it all the time over there, but the London fashion scene is a little more open than the Utrecht campus one, so I usually end up wearing it inside more because it’s just so damn cute.
CF: What do you miss wearing the most when it gets cold and snowy like it is now?
LH: Dresses. I love dresses. And I have a lot of them. In the snow and cold it is so hard to layer them though, I really need to make an effort to not just jump into an oversized boy sweater instead.
CF: Is there anyone you would consider your style icon?
LH: I find influence everywhere, in people walking around with clothes I want so bad I feel like ripping it off them, in TV-shows, on the Internet. I guess that the Japanese kawaii-lolita style, exaggerated as it is, is something I always keep in the back of my mind too when I go shopping.
CF: What are your favorite places to shop?
LH: Haarlem, a Dutch city not far from Utrecht, has an amazing little store called Best Kept Secrets. My bunny-sweater is actually from them. They have the most amazing shoes, accessories and clothes; it’s one of my favorite places in the world.
