I caught these two Fashionistas on their way out to dinner downtown dressed stylishly for the occasion. Their choices in a few statement accessories complement a simple ensemble using bright and metallic pieces to keep things interesting. In their own adaptations they both rocked femininely modern outfits with ’90s inspired and street style elements in the patterns and accessories.
Name: Lauren Bieker and Brittany Steinmann
Major: Merchandise Marketing
CollegeFashionista: What are you guys wearing and where is it from?
Lauren Bieker: The dress is from a little boutique down in Pasadena, nothing special. My blazer is Urban Outfitters and my shoes are from Target.
Brittany Steinman: A Topshop top, which I cut the sleeves off of, American Apparel skirt, Topshop necklace and my shoes are Jeffrey Campbell.
CF: Where do you usually shop?
LB: NASTY GAL. [They have a] lot of fast fashion.
BS: Yeah; Topshop, NASTY GAL or Zara.
CF: What is your favorite item in your closet?
LB: My leather jacket, I actually just bought a new one so I’m really excited about that.
BS: I have an AllSaints kilt dress that I just adore; I bought it probably this winter, it’s awesome.
CF: Is there anything specifically that inspires your style?
LB: I kind of wish I was born in the ’60s. I love a lot of that; I wear a lot of my mom’s ’60s stuff. Or anything with giant shoulder pads that she won’t wear anymore, I’ll take it. I’ve got a really big jean jacket that was her’s; I wear it all the time. But also so much of Los Angeles is street style so, you know, if something looks cool on somebody I’m going to try to adapt it my own way, it’s fun.
BS: I actually like the ’90s a lot. I like the whole circle of it. But I also definitely think street style, your peers.
CF: How would you describe your style?
LB: That’s a hard one. Just because I think that it’s all about personal style, it’s what I feel like and I want to dress for me. It’s individuality, how I feel a certain day.
BS: Same but with a bit of a sweeter side and a little bit of an edge. But yeah, you definitely can’t dress for somebody else. You dress for how you feel in that moment.
How To: If you’re pursuing an adventurous and feminine city outfit like these Fashionistas, start with a simple piece like a plain dress or solid skater skirt. These could be in any simple solid color, from lilac to black. The last and most important part of successfully putting together an inspired ensemble is of course the statement accessories. Try a cute statement necklace or some unexpected shoes to complete this striking look!
