Paris is known for its opulence and sophistication and this is no different when it comes to fashion (it’s the birthplace of haute couture, after all). Louis Vuitton, Lanvin and Chanel are all commonly seen on the Parisian boulevards, donned by immaculately coiffed girls and women. While this is certainly a beautiful sight, this style can get quite boring after a while. Thus, today’s Fashionista was a refreshing sight in the Luxembourg district, carrying off a sporty Americana look like that of Alexander Wang a few seasons back. She epitomizes the “too cool for school” attitude by combining a varsity jacket with a gray hoodie and adds a touch of nerdy-chic with her large framed glasses. With pristine white high-top sneakers tying the outfit together, her look is truly at the top of her class.
Name: Laura Kou
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?
Laura Kou: I only have one word to describe it and that’s “street.” My style is street style.
CF: Where do you like to shop?
LK: I like to shop at stores like H&M, New Look, Urban Outfitters and Topshop. But I also like to go to flea markets (like the ones at Saint-Ouen and Clignancourt) for my clothes— you can dig up a lot of great items if you’re patient enough!
CF: Do you have any style icons that you look up to?
LK: I don’t have any style icons. Honestly, I don’t really need them—I’m my own source of inspiration. I also pick up styling tips from people-watching on the street, since I can see firsthand what looks cool and what doesn’t (as opposed to looking at blogs and magazines).
CF: Your style is quite different from what’s usually described to be “Parisian style.” So, what’s your personal take on what “Parisian style” is?
LK: Actually, my kind of style is quite normal in Paris, at least around me. My friends and classmates have a similar style, and so do many of the people I see walking on the street. I suppose that my style isn’t exactly the same as the style shown in magazines as “Parisian,” but I think that’s true for most people in Paris. There are so many different styles in the city that it can’t just be represented by one.
How to: To emulate Laura’s preppy-cool look, a varsity jacket and a graphic T-shirt are essential. Then, add a little edge to the outfit with a gray hoodie underneath the varsity jacket. For bottoms, opt for dark colored skinny jeans; they’re just as versatile as they are flattering. Hang a large leather crossbody bag on your shoulder, sport some white high-top sneakers on your feet and top it off with a pair of large, black glasses (winged eyeliner recommended).
