Fashionista Spotlight

While once associated with the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and all the glamorous divas of Hollywood, after the arrival of Jersey Shore, leopard print suddenly got a bit of a bad rep. No longer did cheetah print provoke images of dazzling dresses dripping with diamonds or leopard coats (faux of course) to keep out the cold, but rather, Snooki and her impossibly tight club attire. Since Snooki and the gang took the shore, leopard print has been bunched with fake tans, big hair and hot pink stilettos, but this Fashionista definitely brought classy back! She chose a pair of adorable flowy printed shorts, and there’s not a hint of hot pink in sight. The rest of her ensemble is black and an adorable circle statement necklace pulls the look together. She actually, subtly and perfectly, mixes two animal prints with the addition of her snake skin bag. This Fashionista’s outfit is what I imagine a classic New Yorker would put on to venture out into the warm Florida weather: black and animal print. An outfit which is undeniably chic, bold and sassy.

Name: Lara Covell

Major: Advertising and Public relations

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: Where are the pieces from that you’re wearing?

Lara Covell: My shorts and necklace are both from TOBI, and the tank is from Urban Outfitters. The bag is from H&M.

CF: How do you feel about mixing prints? Would you ever consider mixing your leopard shorts with a flower print top?

LC: I think mixing prints is a bold move, but definitely a good statement if done in subtle ways. Maybe not a floral top with the shorts, but a floral headband in a lighter color.

CF: What’s the first section you head to when you go into a store? Dresses? Jewelry? Shoes? Etc.

LC: The first place I head to is the accessory section, because I think all good outfits are built around a bold necklace or edgy ring.

CF: Which Disney princess do you think is most like your style and why?

LC: I would probably say Jasmine, because she has dark features like myself and wears good colors to go with those features like blues and golds.

How To: To achieve this Fashionista’s casual glamour look, start with a statement item in animal print and build around it with neutrals. While her shorts are a perfect fit for Florida, if it’s still cold where you are, try pairing a snakeskin print kimono over a beige top and dark wash skinny jeans. Or for a bit more oomph, add a multi-color feather headband! Animal prints and textures are a great way to spice up your wardrobe, and as the Fashionista suggested (and did!) don’t be afraid to mix and match prints. A great trick is keep one print a neutral, like she did with her black snakeskin bag. So next time you’re looking to amp up your everyday casual, grab an animal print and go wild!
