This Chicago native is an extremely vibrant soul. She needs no one’s approval to live her life the way she wants. This Fashionista wants to become a renowned high fashion designer. She plans to spend some time in other parts of the world so that she can study the native fashions of other cultures and then incorporate those details into her collections. After she becomes established to her expectations, she would like to come back and help Spelman’s Art department develop a fashion department so that students like her don’t get discouraged to pick Spelman College as their undergraduate choice.
Name: Kayla St. Clair
CF: Where do you usually shop?
KS: I mostly shop at thrift stores, only on the half off days. I shop at Off Fifth, Nordstrom Rack, Rag-o-Rama and the Buffalo Exchange.
CF: Who or what inspires your style?
KS: My style is inspired by vintage and high fashion. I am especially inspired by people like Yoko Ono, Solange Knowles, Lisa Bonet, Zoe Kravitz and Jodie Smith.
CF: How would you describe your personal style?
KS: It is hard to pinpoint a way to describe my personal style. I change it up so much. One day I will look like I’m wearing something off the runway and another day I’ll be in Jordans and wool sweats. I love vintage clothing and I love high fashion. I also don’t like being uncomfortable, so I keep that in mind when picking out outfits.
CF: What are your fashion goals in life?
KS: I will be attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York next year. I would like to work for Maison Martin Margiela, Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung or Alexander McQueen before I start my own line.
CF: Who is your favorite style icon and why?
KS: My favorite style icon would have to be Zoe Kravitz. She is extremely beautiful and has a very unique style. I admire her because she is always comfortable and chic. I also love her style because she, like me, will wear a piece differently than it was intended to be worn. For example, she once wore a Chanel skirt on the red carpet as a dress.
To adapt this look for the beach, try a cute white bow bandeau
with these colorful tropical high-waist Bermuda shorts
and crisp white ankle strap heels
to balance out the outfit. Add a short necklace and wear your hair up to accentuate the neck. And lastly, choose your bangles to match.
