While some Fashionistas struggle to make trends their own, others have no trouble fitting popular items into their existing style plans. This Fashionista incorporates a bold blazer and the color emerald, Pantone’s 2013 color of the year, into her casual but confident end-of-break ensemble. Her emerald accents combine with cognac-colored leather shoes and a belt and purse to make even her neutral basics pop. Thrift store finds complete this look by expressing this Fashionista’s strong individuality while playing up modern trends.
Name: Kereknaan (Kay Kay) Fiannaan
Major: Science Pre-Professional
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Kay Kay Fiannaann: Michael Kors shades, a Ralph Lauren blazer, H&M cami, American Eagle Outfitters jeggings, thrifted flats, earrings, scarf and a Sabina handbag from T.J. Maxx.
CF: What was the inspiration for your outfit today?
KF: It’s the last day of break, and looking nice makes me feel better about everything. So in preparation for getting back into school mode, I decided to wear something nice but comfy. I also chose to add green accessories for a little pop of color.
CF: What most excites you about spring fashion?
KF: I’m really excited for bright colors in the spring. I get to wear my bright patterned infinity scarves, and I also get to wear maxi skirts and sandals! I’m also looking forward to playing around with statement sunglasses, pastels, lace and beads.
CF: What trends will you be rocking this summer?
KF: Generally, throughout the summer I plan to wear statement sunglasses, maxi skirts, beaded sandals, crop tops, flower-print shorts, vibrant nail colors and of course my teeny weeny afro!
CF: How would you characterize your personal style?
KF: Throw in some adventure with class and comfort into a bowl. Mix it all together and there you have it — my style.
CF: Where do you go for fashion inspiration?
KF: I absolutely love to thrift because it really engages my sense of style and makes me creative. It forces me to think less about what’s trending out there and more on what I personally want in an outfit. I get inspiration from my mood, music, the weather, blogs and just about anything that I can somehow link to fashion — or not!
How To: Take this basic black Aqua blazer and add extra intrigue by choosing one accent color, as this Fashionista does with emerald. Layer a trendy mint statement necklace over a basic white tank top, or choose these eye-catching Ippolita earrings instead. Pick a belt, loafers and bag that complement each other, and tie the look together with a mint-hued Marc Jacobs accent scarf bursting with color.
