Greek women and men across the nation know how busy the first few weeks back in school can be with one of the biggest events of the semester—Rush Week! But this Fashionista knows how to proudly represent her organization while also maintaining her comfortable but cool look. Mixing Greek gear with more fashion forward pieces keeps things interesting during a long but exciting week.
Name: Katie Fails
Major: Apparel Merchandising with a Minor in Business
CollegeFashionista: Describe what you are wearing?
Katie Fails: I’m wearing a turquoise bid day shirt from my sorority that has different colored flowers in yellow and hot pink with a hot pink tank top underneath. Then I’m wearing a black maxi skirt with grey designs and silver gladiator sandals. I have a hot pink headband and some jewelry to complete the outfit.
CF: How do you maintain your own personal sense of style during Rush Week?
KF: During Rush Week I wear what they ask us to wear, what’s required of us, but I kind of just make it my own too with my own personal style. I like adding different accessories or even just wearing over pieces or under pieces—just making it my own so that I can make it my style but I’m still doing what they ask of us with the sorority.
CF: Where are your favorite places to go to shop?
KF: I shop a lot at Kohl’s. . . Kohl’s and Target I definitely shop a lot at, but since I did my internship at Buckle this summer I shop a lot at Buckle now. I’ve completely updated my wardrobe since working there. I would say those are my three main places to shop. I mean if I’m out and about at a mall or whatever, I’ll shop, or if I see something I like I will definitely buy it, but primarily those are the places that I shop.
CF: How do you like to style your maxi skirts?
KF: Well obviously with a cute top and shoes, but it depends on the pattern of the maxi skirt. If I wear one that has a pattern I like to wear kind of a plain top, and same with the shoes, nothing too big and fancy. I guess be comfortable and not too much on the eyes aesthetically. Vice versa if it is plain, then I’ll wear more of a patterned shirt, just to make sure it is aesthetically pleasing.
How to: Patterned maxi skirts are a cool and comfortable way to look polished during the summer months. A simple T-shirt (Greek or not) in an interesting color can make the skirt’s design pop, and a contrasting tank top adds variety. The outfit can easily be elevated with bejeweled footwear and a bright headband.
