Name: Kara Neumann
Major: Romance Languages and Literatures
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Kara Neumann: Today I’m wearing green-khaki skinny jeans by VINCE with a bright color-blocked sweater from J.Crew, a navy-and-white nautical striped blazer also from J.Crew and camel Tory Burch flats. And my bright red Burberry peacoat keeps me warm while I’m outside!
CF: What inspired your look today?
KN: When I’m picking out my outfit in the morning, I’m always looking for something that is chic but also comfortable enough for me to wear the whole day. I love the sweater in this outfit, because it can make a statement without being too showy. And it’s super soft!
CF: Where did you go for spring break? What styles did you choose to wear?
KN: For spring break I went to New York City with my family and then to my hometown in Houston, Texas. It was still chilly in New York so I wore a lot of jeans, cute sweaters, skirts and dresses with tights. But back in Houston, it was all about dresses and cowboy boots for the rodeo!
CF: What’s your favorite aspect of spring fashion?
KN: I can pull all my bright colors back out — Lilly Pulitzer girl through and through. So by about April, I’m ready for hot pink and bright green again, which, of course, means sundresses and printed shorts. I’m hoping Notre Dame weather cooperates with me.
CF: How would you characterize your style?
KN: My style is pretty traditional but with a bit of an edge. I love the classic lines of Ralph Lauren and Chanel, with a bit of a modern twist. Michelle Williams’ style is so feminine and delicate. My ultimate style icon is probably Lily van der Woodsen or Kelly Rutherford, the actress who played her. I love classic shapes, like the A-line — which apparently is making a return for the spring — and shift dresses, which just work with my body type. I try to stay current, but I don’t like to wear things that are unflattering just because they are on trend. My personal style philosophy is to simply wear what I feel best in.
How To: Miranda Kerr looks stunning in a black-and-white striped blazer in MANGO’s spring/summer 2013 campaign. Take the same blazer and layer it over this Each x Other thin striped T-shirt. To brighten the look, choose a pair of on trend mint jeans and incorporate a vibrant rag & bone or Chan Luu wrap bracelet and a statement necklace. Finally, finish your polished ensemble with camel-colored loafers.
