Sometimes (aka always), getting dressed in the morning is a rushed and discombobulated process. You woke up late, you have a test in your first class and you can’t find your notebook. In these moments, your outfit is the last thing on your mind. One of the easiest ways, however, to take an outfit from basic to unique, is by adding a scarf. A scarf is so easy to throw on and adds layers and new patterns and textures to your look. There are a million different types of scarves so every Fashionista can find her perfect fit! Right now I love Aztec and ethnic printed scarves in vibrant colors. Add them to an all-black look and it’s instantly chic and interesting. Another one of my favorites is a huge, thick scarf that resembles a small blanket. These are the best for the oncoming chilly fall weather that usually leaves us freezing. Overall, scarves are great accessories that require little thought but result in a big impact.

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing and where is it from?
Katitlyn Magnotte: The chambray shirt is from Nordstrom Rack, the tank is Splendid and the leggings are from T.J. Maxx. The scarf is from Pangaea, a boutique near campus and the boots are a beat-up old pair from Steve Madden. My earrings, necklace and emerald ring are gifts from my wonderful grandma and my other ring, bracelet and watch are from a fair-trade boutique at home called Aurora that I worked at one summer.
CF: What’s your favorite item in your closet?
KM: I have this oversized shirt from Urban Outfitters – it’s off-white and has a vintage, Thai elephant graphic design on the front. Besides the fact that elephants are the coolest animals ever, I love it because it’s super soft and looks great dressed up or dressed down. It just makes me smile.
CF: What are some of your favorite trends for the fall?
KM: I’ve seen so many boots recently that have lace cutouts and I think it’s so cute. I’ve also been looking for a perfect, neutral, midi skirt that hits right around the calves. I think it’s a great transitional look that looks awesome with a chambray shirt. I’m also on the hunt for a really cool kimono-style jacket that I can pair with jeans and boots.
CF: How would you describe your wardrobe?
KM: I believe that clothes should be an extension of the self. I have to be comfortable and be able to move around in whatever I’m wearing, or I won’t be happy with my outfit. That being said, I rarely wear gym shorts or sweatshirts out and about. Clothes are the best way to communicate with the world around you, so I try to let my clothes be an extension of my best self.
CF: What’s your favorite season to shop for and why?
KM: Definitely fall – I’m so happy it’s finally starting to cool down in Nashville! Big comfy sweaters, leggings and oodles of boots: what’s not to love?
How To: To replicate this Fashionista’s fabulous fall ensemble, start with a simple background. Black skinny jeans and a cozy knit are the perfect combo. Next, add a statement scarf, either patterned or textured, to enhance your outfit. For shoes, booties work perfectly with the colder fall weather, but cute flats or loafers would also work well. Accessorize with some simple bracelets, like this Fashionista’s wood beaded number.
