Spring has come to Bloomington! Today it managed to spike up to 80 degrees with clear skies and great moods. We all know what weather like this means—shorts! At IU we love them. We’re forced to trek through snow and don layer upon layer of anything warm we can find for half the year; so when we get the chance to bear arms and legs we take it.
Shorts come in all sizes, shapes and colors and can transform any outfit. High-waisted shorts have slimming power and make an outfit chic, floral shorts add some fun and color and classic denim takes an outfit from formal to casual. It is all about finding the perfect shorts for your look.
Name: Joann Charles
Major: Apparel Merchandising
CollegeFashionista: What are you most excited to wear for spring?
Joann Charles: Definitely high-waisted skirts and shorts, especially these! And I love short haircuts that start reappearing when it gets warm.
CF: How do you bring your apparel merchandising background into your wardrobe?
JC: Well I’ve always loved shopping and keeping up on trends, but I’m big on standing out. I avoid major fads like UGG boots and yoga pants.
CF: If you could style IU, what would you change?
JC: I wouldn’t change anybody because people should wear what they’re comfortable in. I wish people wore more vintage clothes though because trends change so quickly. We get overloaded with old clothes that are still really great. I appreciate a good thrifter.
CF: How do you deal with the rainy spring days?
JC: I’m not a fan of rain boots, everyone wears them and I think they’re so ugly. I usually wear weather boots when it rains because they still look good and are my most durable alternative. I don’t have an umbrella either but I do wear a rain coat. I don’t mind getting a little wet.
How To: This look is cute and casual and can be found in any closet. Her high-waisted shorts are bleached dyed, a look which can be bought or a fun DIY project! Either dip, tie-dye or attempt a splattered affect for a look all your own. Add a graphic tee or a blouse for a more formal look. Throw on some combat boots and a messenger bag and you’re ready for spring!
