Throughout various runway shows and seasons, one print has always remained in style, and that is animal print. Every Fashionista knows the impact an eye-catching animal print can have on an outfit. Leopard and giraffe, ostrich and alligator, all prints are welcoming and are an easy way to add an element of sophistication to a look. When worn correctly, they pair well with other patterns like stripes and polka-dots too! Animal prints carry over from season to season and can be as wild and crazy or as tame as you like. My personal favorite and one of the most popular animal prints is cheetah. The subtle tan and black print can even be worn as a neutral when paired with the right accessories. A fashion trend that is quickly catching on, however, is not just animal prints but animal motifs. Whether it is a cute owl on the front of a sweater or a pattern of sheep on a knit, animal motifs are hitting stores, streets and campuses all over the country. Brands such as Madewell, Urban Outfitters and ASOS all offer pieces adorned with playful animals that will spice up any Fashionista’s wardrobe. Get shopping!
Name: Jessica Moore
Major: Political Science and Latin American Studies
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing and where is it from?
Jessica Moore: Today, I’m rocking a dark denim button-down from Madewell, a cheetah print sweatshirt tank from Forever 21 and black skinnies from Urban Outfitters. My circle scarf is from American Apparel and my oxblood platform oxfords are from ASOS. My bag is actually from Target!
CF: Where do you usually shop?
JM: I mostly shop at the places I just listed actually. Urban Outfitters, ASOS and American Apparel are all favorites of mine. I also love to look at Need/Supply and Forever 21 for cheap finds.
CF: What’s your favorite item in your closet?
JM: I love my new brown combat boots from Steve Madden. They have a sweater cuff at the top and go with everything. They look great with cuffed up pants and floral dresses. I’m also looking forward to wearing them into the spring by pairing them with lighter pieces.
CF: What inspires your style?
JM: I’m from Manhattan so I’m constantly surrounded by crazy fashions I see in the parks, on the subways and in the streets. Different neighborhoods have different feels so depending on what mood I’m in, I like to channel areas that inspire me.
CF: What’s next on your shopping list?
JM: I’ve finally given in to the weather and am looking for a pair of heeled booties to wear out at night. My summer wedges and sandals are so cute but won’t cute it for the snow of New York City. Anything in a dark color, like black or navy, with a wedge would be perfect.
CF: What’s your favorite season to shop for and why?
JM: I love shopping for the fall and winter. I’m all about layering and usually wear at least three or four layers on top. Big sweaters in bold prints and huge scarves are also awesome when you don’t have time to put together a more intricate outfit.
How to: To imitate this feisty look, start with an eye-catching animal print statement piece. This leopard print button-down silk top is perfect, a statement but still lightweight. Pair these with some zipper-detailed black skinny jeans to make it edgy. This thick knit sweater would also be ideal for the colder months. Add another shade by sporting some military-inspired pants. When in doubt, go with an accessory. This bag and this scarf will add spice to even an all-black ensemble.
