Fashionista Spotlight

One of my favorite elements of wintertime dressing is boots. The second it’s cold enough, I break out my boots and booties from last winter and start shopping for new ones (I’m also guilty of doing this during the summer). The best part is the huge range of options and variety available. Tall boots are fabulous and come in equestrian and riding boot styles, thigh-highs and lace-up. There are also mid-length choices, like cowboy boots, combat boots and moto boots. Finally, you can go short and rock ankle booties, Chelsea booties or cutout booties. Overall, there is a boot out there for every outfit and every Fashionista. Expand your boot collection by picking ones in new colors or styles you don’t already own. Want to know the best part? They get better with age. The more you wear your boots, the better they’ll look and the better they’ll feel.

Name: Jen Lim

Major: Chemistry and English

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing and where is it from?

Jen Lim: I layered a gray shirt from H&M over a black shift dress from Zara. The green jacket was stolen from my brother’s closet a couple years ago, the pattern tights are from ASOS and the booties are from H&M.

CF: What’s your favorite item in your closet?

JL: I have a black and white plaid shirt from VINCE that I can’t get out of my life. Ask anyone who knows me; I kind of have only one shirt in my closet. And it’s that one.

CF: What inspires your style?

JL: I love pulling inspiration from celebrities who occasionally opt for a more androgynous style, such as Alexa Chung or Emma Watson. They tend to add in subtle elements of femininity that always perfect their outfits. Also, ’90s fashion (I’m thinking Clueless) can be really fun to wear when modified for 2013.

CF: What do you usually wear around campus?

JL: I have an extremely eclectic wardrobe so I really do wear anything from an old band T-shirt to a structured blazer. If I’m feeling lazy, but still want to look put-together, I’ll throw on a casual sundress or maxi so that I won’t have to pair up multiple pieces.

CF: What’s your favorite season to shop for, and why?

JL: Fall, because I love both the darkened color schemes in timeless preppy items and grunge pieces.

How To: With so many boot styles out there, it’s hard to choose just one. If you want a tall boot, try this style, and pair it with tights and a printed dress. For a mid-calf style, go with these combat boots with skinny jeans and a blouse. Finally, try these short booties with a swingy, sparkly dress for the holidays.
