Mixing prints, silhouettes and textures can be more than intimidating, but pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and experimenting is what discovering your personal style is all about. One of the best ways to ease into pushing your style horizons is by pairing prints in unconventional ways, such as mixing stripes with an animal prints and florals. This Fashionista’s look lived up to all of my print mixing dreams, and I had to stop her to ask where she gets her impeccable sense of style from.
Name: Harper Jones
Major: Political Science
CollegeFashionista: Where do you get your style inspiration from?
Harper Collins: I mainly get my style inspiration from online shopping from stores like Nordstrom, Free People and Urban Outfitters, as well as, Instagram.
CF: What is the one item of clothing you can’t live without?
HC: That’s a tough question! It’s a tie between my brown leather boots and sundresses, which is funny because I am wearing both of those things today!
CF: What is your favorite season to dress for, and why?
HC: I absolutely love dressing for fall because you can layer. Also, I feel like fall colors look the best on me, so it’s nice when they are in season.
How To: Step out of your sartorial safe zone, like this Fashionista did, by mixing easy to wear pieces in two different prints. Start with a comfortable and sweet striped dress. If you are looking to make even more of a statement, go for a dress that has a stark black and white striped pattern, like this one from ASOS. Bring in a second print by adding a floral print scarf over your dress. By leaving the scarf long and loose, instead of knotting it around your neck, you will allow the contrast between the floral print and striped dress to fully shine. Finish the look by slipping on your favorite tall boots and a cross body bag in a similar color, and just wait for the compliments to roll on in!
