Fashionista Spotlight

Despite consistently frigid winters and constant snow, the University of Michigan hasn’t cancelled classes since 1978—that is, until now. As temperatures dropped to -30 degrees on Michigan’s first snow day in decades, most students spent their time curled up under their blankets with a cup of coffee and a Netflix marathon to keep them company. However, even in the record-breaking cold, I spotted this Fashionista out and about on campus looking extra chic. Dressed in black J.Crew “Pixie” pants, a loose cowlneck blouse, a gray Michael Kors zip-up cardigan, black Steve Madden booties and a Michael Kors tote bag, her classy ensemble was a refreshing contrast to the dull, winter day.

Name: Grace Hildensperger

Major: Linguistics

Year: Sophomore

College Fashionista: How do you stay on trend while dressing to stay warm in winter weather?

Grace Hildensperger: Staying on trend this winter has never been easier for me! I stay warm by layering, layering and some more layering; I like to pair chic tops that may be too cold to wear by themselves with luxe cardigans and cozy knitwear. Blacks, cobalt blues and deep purples always come back into style around winter time (maybe they never were out of style) so I tend to stick to colors like that to not only keep in the heat, but to also look tres chic!

CF: How would you classify your personal style?

GH: It’s really hard to pinpoint my style to one particular look; as is the case with most people, my style has evolved over time. In high school I was all about experimenting: mixing crazy prints with bright colors and playing with the shape of outfits. Now, my style is different; I wouldn’t say it has toned down, because I believe every style can be compelling, but I would say that it runs more along the lines of comfort and sleekness. I love mixing luxe fabrics with a pair of knockout skinny pants and putting on a leather moto jacket for nighttime.

CF: Where do you look for fashion inspiration?

GH: I look around me for inspiration. I pay attention to what people are wearing, whether here at school or in the magazines, and decide what I like best. This also goes along with not identifying myself with any one style. If I see an all-black ensemble paired with a red lip and like it, I’ll go for it. Or maybe I’ll see someone wearing a pair of awesome bellbottom pants and a slouchy shirt, so I’ll try that too. I think mixing up your look is fresh and exciting!

CF: If you could have anyone’s closet, whose would it be?

GH: Without a doubt, Olivia Palermo. She’s somewhat small like me, and I love how she dresses for her body frame. To me, she is the epitome of evolving style and risk-taking. All in all, she’s fabulous!

How To: To achieve this simple but chic look, start with a basic pair of skinny pants and work up from there. You can’t go wrong with the awesome J.Crew “Pixie” pants that this Fashionista was rocking, but for something more colorful, J.Crew “Minnie” pants are also a good option. For your upper half, put on a basic knit shirt and top it off with a cozy, cashmere cardigan. If you’re feeling adventurous, add a stack of bracelets or a chunky necklace to dress things up a little. Once you put on your warmest jacket, you’ll be ready to brave the cold in style!
