“The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all,” Fa Zhou says to Mulan in Disney’s Mulan. This Fashionista, whom I spotted soaking up the sun on Notre Dame’s last day of classes, epitomizes this aphorism. Despite looming finals and end-of-the-year logistics, she confidently struts across the quad in a bold floral sundress with matching jewelry and summer sandals. With a chic side braid and vintage-inspired sunglasses, this look is all about moving out of spring and into summer.
Name: Gloria Maciorowski
Major: Science Pre-Professional Studies and Psychology
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Gloria Maciorowski: I’m wearing a dress by Judith March from Paperdolls Boutique, T-strap sandals from Urban Outfitters, necklace from Forever 21, bracelets from Paperdolls Boutique and sunglasses from Fred Flare.
CF: What was the inspiration for your outfit today?
GM: It was the last day of classes and an absolutely gorgeous South Bend day (which is rare). I thought it best to celebrate with a fun print!
CF: What are you most looking forward to about summer fashion?
GM: I cannot wait to wear bold, colorful patterns — dresses, tops, jeans and necklaces, you name it. Also loving the colorblock look for spring and summer!
CF: Do you have any summer plans? What looks will you be rocking this season?
GM: I’ve had the best job in the world for the past three years, working at Paperdolls Boutique in St. Louis, and I’ll be there again this summer. I hardly take home a paycheck because all of the clothes we sell are so stinking cute! Usually for work I throw on a cute dress and comfy sandals. My new favorite sandals from Paperdolls are Sseko’s, which have a leather base with interchangeable linen straps in loads of colors that you can tie in a hundred different ways.
CF: Where do you go to find fashion inspiration? Do you have any style icons?
GM: I’m surrounded by the newest trends at Paperdolls; that’s where most of my closet and fashion influence comes from. The brands and pieces we carry are all so unique, and that’s one thing I love about shopping locally either at little boutiques or even second hand stores. I love people watching, and whether I’m at school, home or watching TV, I draw a lot of insight from other people’s outfits. My biggest style influences are probably Karlie Kloss, Marnie from HBO’s Girls and Free People catalogues.
How To: Nothing says summer quite like bright colors so find a printed kate spade sundress or an on-trend Ark & Co. maxi dress in the brightest shades you can find! Match it with a floral necklace and bracelet or bangle in a similar color palette. To draw out the blue hues of the dress, consider choosing a necklace and bracelet in a contrasting shade like coral. Complete the look with strappy cognac-colored sandals, vintage Nazareno Gabrielli sunglasses and perhaps Michael Kors gold hoops for some extra summer fun.
