With spring break right around the corner, students can hardly wait to exchange campus snowy scenery for sunlit islands and sandy beaches. Though many of us are suffering from the pressure of midterms and some serious spring fever, I spotted this Fashionista on the Diag, smiling wider than ever on a beautiful winter day. Wearing a laid back yet luxe ensemble, she was heading home to relax after finishing a morning full of classes, projects and all the other shenanigans that accompany exams.
Name: Genevieve Chiminski
Major: Kinesiology—Movement Science
CollegeFashionista: What item is your go-to piece for chilly weather?
Genevieve Chiminski: My puffy pillow scarves from Urban Outfitters; I own three different colors. They keep you warm, are comfy and are great for quick naps in the library.
CF: If you could go anywhere in the world to shop, where would you go and why?
GC: I would most definitely go to Milan. The shopping is incredible there, not to mention the beautiful architecture, people and history. I love seeing similarities and differences between European and American fashion, plus it’s always great to be somewhere where there’s delicious pasta and pizza to stuff your face with after a day of shopping!
CF: Who is the style icon you most admire?
GC: Emma Watson—aside from being absolutely stunning, she plays up her beauty with classy and comfortable looks. Her style ranges from jeans and a leather jacket to a skirt with a sweater, so she’s always dressed appropriately and can be comfortable without looking like a bum. Essentially, she always looks “nice” and that’s what I strive for.
CF: What is your favorite part about transitioning from winter to spring fashion?
GC: Skirts and dresses! It’s always a wonderful time when I can once again visit the skirts and dresses in my closet, throw on a pair of tights with boots (or if the snow has finally melted, my Converse) and then add scarves and sweaters. I like when spring comes, I can still use some of my winter layering pieces to warm up my outfits. Spring means colors and flowers, which mean happiness and smiles all around!
CF: If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
GC: Black and white. Ugh I’m boring, but they’re such useful colors. You can wear them with jeans, leggings or just about any other colored pant or skirt. Plus, they’re wearable year-round, so that’s nice too since I like to stick to my staples.
How To: To begin constructing this Fashionista’s outfit, start with a standard chambray shirt. To achieve the oversized look shown here, get it one or two sizes too big. Layer it over a simple tank, add a decorative infinity scarf on top and slide on your favorite skinny jeans. For your feet, opt for waterproof, lace-up booties to protect you from the melting snow that signals the arrival of spring. Lastly, clip your hair back with a classic hair bow and be on your way!
