When the Alabama heat is in full swing, many succumb to the scorching rays and sacrifice style for comfort. This Fashionista’s denim on denim combo is a great example of how to stay cool in an easy one textile look. Uniform textiles are a hot trend this season, be it Phillip Lim’s printed short suit set or this Fashionista’s all denim ensemble.
Name: Erin Shelton
Major: Mechanical Engineering
CollegeFashionista: Describe what you’re wearing and where you got it.
Erin Shelton: The denim shirt (I cut the sleeves off myself) is from Urban Outfitters, the denim cut-off shorts are vintage Levi’s and shoes are Steve Madden.
CF: How would you describe your personal style? Where do you get style inspiration?
ES: My personal style really depends on what I find that I decide looks good that day. I am really into the all black look. It’s clean, easy and black makes everyone look good. I am also into an edgier style, ranging from crazy colors and heels to studs and spikes. I am a sucker for a boho laid back style as well. Any kind of maxi dress or flowing top is great to me. I get my style inspiration from various fashion blogs and magazines, a few being ELLE, Vogue, People Style Watch and Glamour.
CF: What three things in your closet can you not live without?
ES: First of all, choosing three things from my closet is impossible, but my simple black strappy Steve Madden heels, they are my favorite and go with any and everything. I would probably have to say my denim shirt from Urban Outfitters, it’s really versatile and super comfortable. Also, my black silk shorts from Forever 21. I mistake them for running shorts because they’re so comfortable but can be dressed up and made super sexy. They’re sleek, easy and comfortable.
CF: What are your favorite designers, stores to shop from?
ES: My favorite places to shop would have to be Zara, American Apparel, H&M, Forever 21 and Topshop. Honestly, I could shop anywhere, I love everything from high end fashion to thrift store finds. Forever 21 is my favorite for that quick outfit you need to pull together without spending a lot of money or looking too cheap.
CF: What spring trends are you looking forward to rock and what will you pair them with?
ES: I am all about print this season. I want to get more creative at mixing all different kinds of prints. Another trend is chambray and denim, I love denim on denim done the right way and pairing a denim or chambray shirt with anything usually works. I also like the peek-a-boo midriff trend. I usually don’t like to show much skin, but it’s just enough to be sexy and tasteful when on a midi or maxi dress.
How to: Instead of buying a new sleeveless chambray shirt, cut off the sleeves of your button-down from seasons past like this Fashionista. Pair with your favorite denim cut-offs and minimal accessories. Dainty bangles and classic aviator sunglasses are great for the spring and summer. Add a pair of black gladiator sandals for day and transition to night by switching into some strappy nude heels.
