Spring is in the air here in Binghamton. However, spring in Binghamton means anything above freezing. Students are ditching their winter coats and boots and are beginning to wear light jackets and cardigans. As you walk around campus you can see a cheery vibe amongst students and their excitement for the raising temperature. This Fashionista is ready for the warmer weather and dresses in an appropriate way to combat the vague in between weather climate.
Name: Emma Siegel
Major: Graphic Design
CollegeFashionista: Describe your approach to shopping.
Emma Siegel: When I shop, I look for things that are comfortable, cute and affordable. However, I definitely have a harder time shopping because I am so small, and it’s hard to find things that fit.
CF: What is the one item you spend the most money on?
ES: I splurge on shoes. I have a very small foot, so it’s a challenge finding shoes that are tiny. If I find a pair that fit and are cute, I will spend more.
CF: How do you keep up with the latest trends?
ES: I get inspiration from people around me, but I don’t let society pressure me into wearing certain things if I don’t like it. I choose the trends that I think fit my personality.
CF: What style advice can you give to other students?
ES: I think the best advice I can give is to be comfortable with what you wear and don’t try too hard— just be you. I find the best outfits are the ones that are spontaneous and not too planned out.
How To: Dressing for a temperature that isn’t too warm or too cold is a difficult feat. You often find yourself searching through your closet for the right jacket or the right pair of shoes to wear. This Fashionista perfectly displays a look that has all the elements needed to dress successfully for ambiguous weather. She’s got warmth to fight the wind chills, yet she wears lighter shoes just in case it gets warmer later in the day. To find a similar look, first start off with a vest. This adds a nice touch to an outfit because it serves as a coat, but you won’t be too warm wearing it if it’s sunny out. You can wear it over a sweater, sweatshirt or even a long sleeve shirt— there are so many options, like this one from The North Face. The next element to the outfit is the scarf. The scarf adds the nice touch of color to the outfit, and, although it’s thick, it still helps make the outfit shift from winter to spring. Nordstrom has a nice collection of scarves. The last step is the shoes. Boat shoes are perfect for the spring. They are a great in between weather kind of shoe. They definitely give the outfit a preppy feel, but do not go overboard.
