It’s impossible not to notice that black and white has been one of the hottest trends this year. (I type this as I’m wearing a black and white striped T-shirt). You can find it in color-blocked skirts and dresses, striped pants and also in accessories. Luckily, this is a trend that can be worn year round and on any type of garment. Today’s Fashionista, who is an Australian native, is rocking a fun pair of black and white gingham shorts that she found at a local thrift store. She accessorizes with a simple black menswear inspired belt and black huarache sandals. Instead of keeping her entire look limited to the two colors, she is wearing a cute purple crop top that goes perfectly with her high-waisted bottoms.
Name: Emma Pitman
Major: Writing and Cultural Studies
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style in three words?
Emma Pitman: Thrifty, boho, mermaid.
CF: If you could raid any celebrity’s closet, whose would it be and why?
EP: Alexa Chung because she always looks casual and cool.
CF: What’s one trend you would never wear?
EP: Crocs! Or a moustache.
CF: What is your favorite season to dress for and why?
EP: Summer because it’s just so easy to wear a dress.
CF: How would you describe the difference between American and Australian style?
EP: Americans seem to wear a lot of athletic clothes, whereas Australians tend not to. It’s difficult to say because both countries have such a variety but I think, in general, American style is quite casual and classic and Australian style can be quite eccentric.
How To: The black and white trend is one that anyone can sport for a daytime or nighttime event. Keep your look quirky like today’s Fashionista with a pop of color and a high messy bun. For an evening occasion you can try it out with a cute gingham dress, a pair of colorful flats and simple accessories. When the fall weather rolls around, throw on a black and white sweater over a pair of skinny jeans and some loafers or tall leather boots for class. Add a colorful necklace that will pop against the black and white and you’ll look classically quirky.
