With all the fashion weeks winding down, designers, retailers and bloggers are buzzing about the spring season and looking forward to when the collections hit the stores. It’s not surprising, the spring shows were amazing and everyone loves to see the new trends and dream of pieces for their wish list. Although new things are exciting, I’d like to make a case for vintage, the older gems. Vintage pieces can be just as groundbreaking as a new dress from Delpozo’s spring/summer 2014 collection. The feeling of discovering an old Gucci blazer among the racks and racks of thrifted pieces is exhilarating. Finding Céline loafers in a flea market or a leather saddlebag is like Christmas. So although the spring shows have us looking forward and anticipating release dates, don’t forget to look to the past for fashion inspiration as well.
Name: Emily Gardner
Major: Biology and Spanish
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing and where is it from?
Emily Gardner: I am wearing a Goodwill floral maxi dress (one of my best finds yet!), H&M white wedges, a vintage Dooney & Bourke bag and a brown accent belt from some random store.
CF: Where do you usually shop?
EG: I realized that the entirety of one of my outfits the other day was from H&M…so that’s definitely a staple store for me along with Forever 21. I love thrift shopping too, so I often hit up Goodwill or Thrift Town.
CF: What are some of your favorite trends for the fall?
EG: I’m in love with leather these days because it’s so versatile. My friend said it well in saying that fall is not about sweater weather, but leather weather! I’m also a huge fan of easy to throw on circle scarves.
CF: What do you usually wear around campus?
EG: Really a mixture of everything. I find pants to be uncomfortable and restrictive in general (don’t we all?), so I’m usually in a flowy dress, shorts or occasionally MC Hammer-esque pants. If you see me trying extra hard, it usually means that I have a really intense day of tests or something. I’m all about the dress for success philosophy.
CF: What’s next on your shopping list?
EG: I just spent a cringe-worthy percent of my paycheck at H&M the other day, so I’m taking a shopping hiatus. But my wish list includes big, comfy sweaters, circle sunglasses (if I can pull them off) and a denim vest!
How To: To rock the vintage look like this Fashionista, first try checking out the local thrift stores in your area. Online websites also offer some fabulous vintage-like items. Try this floral printed dress and define your waist with a thin leather belt. For height, try wedges with a thick heel to anchor your floral dress. A simple cross-body bag and red lipstick finish off an easy look!
