Fashionista Spotlight

April showers bring May flowers…but what about April snow? With Monday reaching eighty degrees and Tuesday bringing snow flakes, this certainly has not been an easy week for fashion. As Pittsburgh anxiously awaits the return of spring skirts and sandals, we can only hope our jackets and boots look as good as this Fashionista’s!

Name: Emily Bastaroli

Major: Journalism

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?

Emily Bastaroli: I would say my style is eclectic in the sense that I don’t really stick to one style. It really depends on my mood and what I’m doing that day. When I’m working, I like to keep it professional, but add my own touch by mixing patterns and adding a little edge. When I’m just running around, I like to be comfy but more edgy sneakers, band tees, high-waisted shorts or jeans, then adding feminine touches through jewelry or other accessories.

CF: Has your style changed at all throughout your college experience?

EB: My style hasn’t necessarily changed too much other than where I shop. I’ve expanded my wardrobe to include classic, more professional pieces for my internship and facing the real world once I graduate. The way I shop has also changed—I tend to look a littler closer to the quality of fabric now.

CF: Where do you find inspiration for your outfits?

EB: I find outfit inspiration from some of my favorite fashion icons— from Lana Del Rey, to Audrey Hepburn and even the Kardashian/Jenner sisters. I really think Kendall and Kylie are really showing their fashion sense and they are on top of the latest trends. But my mood mostly inspires my outfit for the day. I also try to look at the latest runway fashions and try to interpret them in my own way.

CF: How do you accessorize a simple look?

EB: I love a bold statement necklace! It can turn any plain outfit into a chic ensemble. I recently discovered BaubleBar and I am OBSESSED! I can’t wait to buy some necklaces and earrings. I also love a bold lip; I’m obsessed with purple lipstick and burnt orange is also great for spring!

CF: What is your favorite spring trend?

EB: Right now, I really like the skater skirt. I know that was a thing last year, but it’s a very flattering shape and it can be dressed up or down. I also really like the tea-length skirts and oversized trousers that were all over the spring runways.

How To: Black pants are a staple for every girl’s wardrobe. They look good with just about everything, and this outfit is no exception. Try wearing yours with a pair of black ankle booties. I love the studs on this pair from! To maintain an edgy look, opt for a patterned top. This translucent camo shirt is perfect for playing up an interesting print while looking put together. A colorful statement necklace like this one can help liven up your look. Finish the outfit with a faux leather army jacket.
