While accessorizing is one way of embellishing an outfit, this Fashionista knew exactly how to let her clothes (literally) shine on their own. Her choice to pair her green and white Lilly Pulitzer skirt with a navy jeweled shirt not only broke conventional color pairings, but also provided her outfit with the perfect hint of casual elegance.
Name: Elizabeth Kim
Major: Management & Baking and Pastry Arts
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?
Elizabeth Kim: I would describe my style as very classic, streamlined and leaning towards “preppy.”
CF: Where do you go for style inspiration?
EK: For style inspiration I go to my favorite fashion blogs, Cupcakes and Cashmere and Atlantic-Pacific! To see what I can come up with, I also like to try on random pieces in my closet together.
CF: Do you have any tips on mixing patterns and color?
EK: Whenever I wear a loud print, I try to match it with something more monotone. I love a patterned skirt with a white blouse. I also love wearing a monochrome outfit (usually white or black) with one statement pattern—either shoes or a scarf! When there aren’t any patterns involved, I love to color-block with bright colors, like wearing yellow pants or shorts with a bright pink tank. It’s so refreshing and summery.
CF: How has your style evolved since attending Penn?
EK: I have been really into “have one statement piece”, especially during the winter months or at more formal events. I love wearing an all-black outfit with a statement necklace or earrings.
CF: What style advice do you have for college students?
EK: Make sure you stock up on tops that can easily be for class or for a night out! I found that I needed shirts that are more versatile when I found myself rotating between the same 3 to 4 shirts whenever I went out!
How To: Versatility is key in a college wardrobe. With a limited amount of closet space and a limited budget, it is always worth investing in pieces that can be easily worn and accessorized with multiple looks. This Fashionista’s navy blouse is a great example of a quality piece that can be easily recycled with multiple outfits. Worn as this Fashionista did, it makes the perfect summer brunch outfit. When layered under a sweater, it adds the perfect hint of elegance to a winter look.
