Fashionista Spotlight

For the first time in months, today was warm enough to order an iced coffee. Considering the multiple polar vortexes many of us have endured this winter, I would absolutely consider that a milestone. While that may speak volumes about the general level of excitement in my life right now, I can’t help but be happy that Ann Arbor is finally showing signs of spring. With the sun out and the snow starting to melt, this Fashionista jumped at the opportunity to exchange her parka and snow boots for some lighter layers. Styled in a pulled together and preppy outfit, she was prepared to take on a hectic day packed with eight hours of class and an evening of extracurriculars.

Name: Colleen Devine

Major: Public Policy (Concentration in Women’s Studies)

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How do you balance fashion and comfort to prepare for a busy day on campus?

Colleen Devine: On days when I don’t have a lot of time to get ready, I tend to pick out more basic outfits. I’ll pair leggings with a cute sweater and throw on a fun scarf or statement necklace. During busier days, I find it much easier to dress simply than to be worrying about my outfit all day long.

CF: Which item in your closet can you not live without?

CD: I love my beige infinity scarf! Not only is it warm and cozy for the never-ending Michigan winter, but I can also pair it with a lot of different outfits.

CF: What is your favorite season to dress for?

CD: Summer has to be my favorite season to dress for because I love to wear sundresses. You always look put together when wearing a sundress, but they also require minimal effort.

CF: Where do you find fashion inspiration?

CD: I actually get a lot of my fashion inspiration from my mom (shout out). Most of her wardrobe consists of classic, timeless pieces that I’ll take and wear with something that is currently trendy.

CF: If you could travel anywhere in the world to shop, where would you go and why?

CD: If I could shop anywhere in the world, I would definitely raid Kate Middleton’s closet. Her style embodies classic elegance; plus who wouldn’t want to dress like a princess?

How To: If you want to channel this Fashionista’s simple, classy look, a basic, striped T-shirt in a neutral color is a must-have. For chillier days, layer a quilted down vest over the shirt, or pair it with a traditional cardigan for warmer weather. To completely transition this look into spring, exchange dark pants and warm boots for white skinny jeans and leather sandals. Lastly, to top everything off, take the advice of this Fashionista and finish with a bright statement necklace to add a pop of color.
