Sometimes, even the summer weather can let us down. Thankfully for us Fashionistas/os, this provides the opportunity to break out our favorite piece that we haven’t been able to give attention to since the early spring. I spotted this Fashionista in her fur bomber jacket, embracing an opportunity to make a statement not only about fashion and the weather, but also about herself.
Name: Claire Pickard
College Fashionista: When did you first discover fashion?
Claire Pickard: Back in the beginning of high school, I read an article in either Seventeen or Cosmo that said to play up some part of your personality that you like, and your makeup and clothes should accentuate that aspect of your personality. I decided to go for a “better to be feared than loved” look, and wore clothes that made me look intimidating, like five-inch heels and padded blazers from the ’80s.
CF: What are the most important elements in a statement piece?
CP: I like things that shock people, so I look for spikes and studs, bold shoulder detail and unexpected patterns and textures.
CF: What inspires your daily style?
CP: I think everybody is just trying to be different in college. We don’t know who we are at this age, so I like to use clothes as a costume. I play the role of the goth, prep, typical college “hipster” or really, anything that fits what I’m feeling that day. I just want to wear clothing that expresses my personality.
CF: What are your favorite stores?
CP: I love Urban Outfitters. I also dig up some treasures at Goodwill. So many people shop at the same places though, so I need to keep up my effort and make bold, unique statements with my style. Many times, the clearance racks are home to these pieces.
CF: If money was not a factor, what would you buy?
CP: If you had asked me four years ago, I would have said a Hermès Birken purse. At this point though, I would have to say a full length fur coat.
How To: Color-blocking is extremely versatile, and it means you can use almost anything in your closet to achieve the look. A good pair of high-waisted colored denims can add that element of high fashion, and some patterned sneakers will easily put that personal touch on any color-blocked ensemble. Finish it off with a statement piece, like a bold necklace or shocking jacket, to make the look your own.
