Fashionista Spotlight

When it comes to award shows, such as the Oscars last week, many people have become just as fascinated with the fashion on the Red Carpet as the awards themselves. It has become evident how much the media has not only an impact on our lives culturally, but also has an impact on our lives fashionably. Many Fashionistas everywhere get some of their inspiration from the media and from celebrities. Especially as a college student, there is nothing more relaxing than winding down at night with your friends and watching your favorite celebrities walk the Red Carpet on tv. I talked with this Fashionista to see where she gets some of her inspiration from and what she had liked best on the Red Carpet last week.

Name: ChangChang Wu

Major: English Literature

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What was your favorite look on the red carpet and how were you inspired?

ChangChang Wu: My favorite look was Cate Blanchett’s! Wearing an Armani nude dress with Swarovski crystals, she pulled off the daring trend in an elegant way. I was inspired by her confidence as she walked on the Red Carpet wearing the dress. It also reminded me of my favorite designer, Christian Dior and his style in emphasizing women’s waists with elegant, sparkly pieces. The sparkly sweater I am wearing reminded me of one of his pieces!

CF: How have you been inspired by Christian Dior’s designs off the red carpet?

CW: I love how he has styled suits and blazers over dresses. I have definitely incorporated that look into my wardrobe! I love the balance between the femininity of the dress and the masculinity of the blazer.

CF: Which celebrity inspires you the most and why?

CW: Eva Green inspires me the most. Not only in what she wears but also in how she carries herself. She wears very happy make-up. Also, I think her sharpness and femininity stands out among other celebrities. I think it’s important in fashion to be inspired by moods and not just in clothes.

CF: While Penn State’s campus may not be the Red Carpet, what are your favorite ways to dress up?

CW: For class, I like wearing layers. No matter the season, I love mixing and matching tons of patterns and floral. To go out with friends I like wearing fur. Instead of layering it, I prefer wearing fur by itself like on the runways such as wearing a fur vest paired with a tank top and a skirt.

How To: Nothing makes an outfit more complete than confidence! Take your inspiration from celebrities and make them your own. Start off with statement pieces like a fun sparkly sweater. Add fun accessories to complete your look like a statement bag that’s following the army green trend, a pair of oversized glasses or a floral scarf, whichever you’re inspired by most!
